Dana Point is a city in California. It is the most populous city in Orange County and the second most populous city in Southern California after Los Angeles. The population of Dana Point was 794,819 as of 2019, making it the fourth-most populous city in Southern California. The name Dana Point comes from two nearby point(s) on San Onofre Island: "Dana" meaning "Narrows" and "Point" meaning "a promontory." The first permanent European settlement at Dana Point was founded by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on December 6, 1542 when he and his men landed on San Vicente Island to collect salt for the Spanish crown. The island's primary use until 1602 was as an auxiliary landfall for ships sailing between Mexico City and Catalina Island. In that year, Englishman Francis Drake sailed into Newport Harbor off Newport Beach while en route to attack Spanish San Diego with his fleet of thirty vessels before returning to England. In 1871, John Clements Davis became factor at Mission Trails Rancho del Rey (later known as Mission Viejo). In 1872 he purchased 4,000 acres (2 km²) of land northwest of town along Cannery Row and built what would become one of America's largest missions - Mission Trails Farm - which still stands today. Davis also founded Bakersfield Park in 1870 which served as a model for Riverside Park east of Philadelphia. In 1907, president Theodore Roosevelt acquired 1,500 acres (60 ha) adjacent to Mission Trails Farm when he bought Rancho Santa Margarita from John Clements Davis' heirs near present-day Dana Point Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway. This acquisition led to what is now Roosevelt National Monument located within boundaries defined by maps drawn up during the 1906–07 US Geographic Names Survey under Ulysses S Grant administration which were expanded portions of then-Beach Colony land grants awarded to various American presidents includingRoosevelt following passage of the US Land Act 1912 (). Settlement increased rapidly due to World War II military buildup with Naval Air Station Long Beach being established on former mission lands about 1 mile northeast of present-day downtown Dana Point on February 14, 1943 (). After World War II ended there was little military activity taking place within or around town limits; however some new housing developments began appearing inland such as Seal Beach Village () and Marina Del Rey Village (). Dana Point has experienced rapid growth over recent decades thanks largely to its location close to Interstate 5 (), its position adjacent bothollies open water resources (), its strong economy (), growing population density (), waves of foreign immigrants settling in coastal counties () especially since 1990s (), inclusion in bothOrange County Regional Transportation Authority (OCRTA) services covering much central OC area including cities like Laguna Niguel beyond Irvine county line ()),,,,,,and recently more major development projects announced for Downtown Pomona consisting primarily office/residential space renewal/updates inside old navy shipyard just inland from beachfront
