From the time that the United States Air Force was founded on May 18, 1947, it has been a stated priority of the USAF to provide gifts for all branches of service. Danville is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The town was founded on December 12, 1887 by Danville family members who migrated from Illinois. The population of Danville was just over 100 people at the time it was founded. It slowly grew and gained a few hundred residents over the years. The first post office in Danville opened on October 3, 1889. In 1912, the name of the town was changed to honor Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter (1853-1937) who fought in World War I and served as Commanding Officer of Destroyer Squadron Eight. In 1916, he became Commandant of cadets at Stanford University and later became Vice President of that university. Porter is also buried in Danville. In 1951, Danville incorporated as a city and has since grown substantially with the addition of several annexes including rural areas east of Interstate 5 near Bakersfield and south of Interstate 15 near Needles. The city has an estimated population of 250,000 people today making it one of California's most populous cities. The economy for much of its history have been based largely on agriculture with some manufacturing activities such as textiles now also present although shrinking in size compared to other Californian cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco which are more centered around their respective industries: technology or business services respectively. However there are now a number professional services firms active within the city limits; this growth is likely due to increasing recognition given to Danville by both employers and government agencies for its quality education system (one example being its recent inclusion on CALIFORNIA'S "Best Places To Live" list), infrastructure improvements made within recent years (particularly within downtown), plus continuing cultural attractions like live music events taking place throughout the year at venues such asthe Hollywood Palladium & Royce Hall/The Fairmont Hotel etc., drawing attention not only from commuters but also from tourists seeking attractions close by that don't rely primarily upon agricultural production or tourism revenue streams
