Danville, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 58,154 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose–Sunnyvale-Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Danville were Jedediah Smith and his men in 1827. They named it for Colonel Nathaniel Danforth (1795-1868), an American general who fought in Mexico andought to annex California. The town began as a small trading post near where modern day Interstate 80 crosses the creek that flows through it. In 1849, General store owner James Fenton built a house on land he had purchased from José Castro as part of Rancho Rinconada de las Pulgas (Castro's Preserve). The first post office was established at Fenton's store in 1850 with Wm Hite as clerk. In 1853, Don Pedro Sanchez organized a military band called "Majestic 25" which played at various dances throughout Northern California while service members were stationed there during the Mexican-American War. When war ended and hostilities ceased, Sanchez sold his interest in Majestic 25 and moved to Santa Clara to continue playing music during Carnival season. In 1858 another early developer, Hiram Sutter founded Sutter's Fort about one mile east of present day Danville on top of Mount Diablo mountain near Warm Springs National Park; this fort served as an artillery battery for Santa Clara County during the Spanish-American War years when Los Angeles County was undeveloped and under Spanish control Sutter also founded Solano Agricultural College in 1865 which became UC Berkeley after its establishment by Royal Charter from King George V on November 17th 1924 In 1861 Daniel Webster startedWebster & Webster mercantile business in downtown Danville with four partners including John Mapes who later became president of UC Berkeley . Danville, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Danville is part of Fresno County and is bordered by the city of Fresno to the north and east, Chico to the south, and Madera to the west. The town was founded in 1887 by George W. Dixon as a ranching community on Rancho San Lorenzo. It became an agricultural center due to its location between Tulare and Riverside counties and its access to water resources. In 1934 it was incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Northern California's largest cities with over 100,000 residents. The city's economy is based on agriculture, services, trade, industry, transportation, real estate development, tourism and education. The history of Danville begins with George W. Dixon who settled in 1887 in what is now Danville after purchasing Rancho San Lorenzo from Manuel Nieto for $5 per acre ($125 today). Dixon had come from Illinois where he had worked as a landowner before becoming interested in ranching after watching his brother-in-law succeed in doing so. He purchased 825 acres (300 hectares) northeast of present day Danville for $10 per acre ($200 today). This land would eventually become home to more than 1 million people across 10 counties when it was annexed into Fresno County in 1925; making it one of the most populous areas within Fresno County at that time (it now ranks No. 2 behind nearby Los Angeles). Dixon used his land for dairy farming until 1911 when he sold out to John Sanger who then turned it into cotton farming which continued until 1922 when he sold it again to Harry Laughlin who turned it into hay production until his death in 1951; leaving deed restrictions which allowed only general merchandise sales without any other special privileges such as being able sell cars or appliances inside city limits – something which continues today with just two exceptions: Ford dealership on Main Street and Home Depot on Elmira Road (both are open 24/7). From 1951-1974 there were no grocery stores or other retailers within city limits while all sales took place through various farmers markets outside of town – this arrangement still persists today in some form or another! In 1954 City Manager Vernon Ahern proposed annexing rural portions of Chico due to concerns about its future growth potential given that many residents were moving away from downtown due Mayor Tom Bradley's initiatives called "A Better Tomorrow". On July 17th 1954 voters approved annexation by voting 88% against a resolution opposing annexation put forth by Councilman Arturo Sanchez with only 3 abstentions! The vote marked an important turning point for Danville as mayor Bradley soon began implementing new policies focusing on keeping downtown vibrant while annexing more rural area giving hope that its future would be better than ever before! It wasn't until 1977 thatDanville opened its first bank account thanks to donations from local businesses including Kelly’s Department Store (now Macy’s), Bob Kapp Chevrolet & Pontiac dealership etcetera!! Today there are over 40 banks operating throughout our great city!!
