Danville is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 21,591 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the eastern edge of Danville Valley and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the south and east, Carquinez Strait to the north, and Menlo Park to the west. The valley was named after General Daniel Morgan (1755-1832), who served as military commander of much of what is now Contra Costa County. The first European settlers in Danville were immigrants from northern Italy. They arrived around 1825 and built a cabin on top of an old millrace that they called "Hagerman's Mill." In 1829, two brothers named Brown purchased land from the original Italian settlers and started farming it. They also built a log cabin known as "Brown's Cabin" which still stands today. In 1830, John Sutter came to California with his brother Peter and founded Sutter's Land Company in Stockton. He sold some of his land in Danville to various investors including James Fenton and George Hearn for $5 per acre ($ or $ ). In 1834, Fenton sold his interest in Sutter's Land Company to James Irvine for $10 per acre ($ ). The early pioneers did not have any livestock so they had to get their food from nature. To cook their meals, they erected crude fires at night near where they lived or used open woods fires that burned all day long.
