Danville is a small town in Alameda County, California, United States. It was founded in 1868 by James A. Danforth and his brothers-in-law Uriah and Elias Howe. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1887, with its first store being opened in 1889. The town reached an population of 10,000 by 1907. In 1942, the Japanese bombed Danville without warning, killing 29 people and wounding many more. The bombing has been called one of the most devastating attacks on American citizens during World War II. The community has experienced several surges in population over the years; it had a population of 24,599 as of 2010[1]. However, its growth has slowed significantly since 2000,[2], as a result of both local economic stagnation and national trends such as immigration from Mexico and Asia.[3] The history of Danville began with James A. Danforth and his two brothers-in-law Uriah (1821-1902) and Elias Howe (1828-1920). These men were instrumental in starting what would become one of California's largest towns - at its peak it had 9 stores and 100 inhabitants[4]. As early as 1868 Danforth set out to improve transportation between San Francisco and Sacramento through building a wagon road that he named "The Central Pacific Road" (later known as "The beaten track"). In 1887 when the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in central Alameda County there was great demand for goods transported eastward across Lake Merritt which lay just north of downtown San Francisco on the other side of Millbrae Strait. By 1893Danforth’s company had constructed four warehouses along Third Street southbound from Center Street just east of Center Street – this became known as “the Warehouse District” because so much railroad freight was handled here that large warehouses could be built anywhere near tracks or railways[5]. This period saw rapid growth for all aspects associated with Danforth firms including hardware stores, grocery stores etc., but especially hardware stores due to increased demand for wagons for shipment across country[6][7].
