Danville is a small town in Northern California, located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 as a result of a land grant from Governor John C. Frémont. Danville grew up around agriculture and became known for its cornfields and fruit orchards. The first post office was established in 1855, and it changed its name to Danville in 1865 after General Don Carlos Buell's headquarters were built there. Danville saw heavy military activity during World War II; from 1942 to 1945, it was home to Vandenberg Air Force Base (now Edwards Air Force Base). During that time, many civilians were killed by Japanese forces due to their proximity to the air base. In 1951, Supervisor of Schools Paul Auerbach persuaded then-Governor Goodwin Goodyear to establish an education department within the state government so that Danville could have an Elementary School District Number 1 (ESD #1), which would later become Contra Costa Unified School District #2. In 1957, ESD #1 merged with San Francisco Unified School District #1 to form Contra Costa County Public Schools (CCPS). In 1969, CPS merged with Marin Catholic High School District 4 (MCDS4) to form Marin Unified School District 3 (MUSD3). Since 2000, when CCPS has been split into two entities - one based in Walnut Creek and one based in Danville -Danville has slowly lost population as people move away for work or other reasons outside of rural California. However, according to the 2010 US Census report which measures demographic changes over time -Danville's population size remains about 7% below its 1970 peak even though its economy has shrunk since then-the total number of residents may only marginally exceed 8500 over coming years if economic conditions stay relatively good because most residents are scattered thinly across multiple counties within most major metropolitan areas around this state while many others commute into larger cities for work or pleasure purposes during these same years. Today much like it did when first settled some seventy years ago there is still plenty going on here just off the beaten path not typically found near large citys...a place where you can take your dog for a walk down Main Street without feeling like you're walking into competition with other businesses looking for space next door!
Danville was founded in 1853 by Capt. George W. Danforth and his wife, Lucy Ketcham. The town was named after Daniel Boone, who had settled in the area in 1776. In 1850, the Danforth family donated land to the city for a public square. The first school in Danville opened in 1856. In 1865, the City of Danville merged with nearby El Toro to form the City of Irvine.
