It is about 25 miles northeast of Fresno and its sister city, Danville Junction, is about 15 miles east of Stockton. The town was named for Daniel Webster (1784-1857), an American senator from Massachusetts who helped negotiate the Treaty of Gadsden that ceded Alabama to Mexico in 1819. Webster had also lived in Danville while attending college at Sacramento University. In 1868, Danville became one of California's 14 towns served by the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1924, it became part of the newly created Riverside County when it was divided from Yuba County. Danville has been home to many businesses and organizations over its history: First Baptist Church (founded in 1889), South Gate Avenue United Methodist Church (founded in 1911), Agricultural Experiment Station (established 1915), and Easton Municipal Utility District No. 1 (started serving customers on May 10, 1925). Danville is a city located in the Central Valley of California, about 80 miles east of Fresno. With a population of over 135,000 as of 2010, Danville is the most populous city in Kern County and the second-largest city in California after Los Angeles. The name "Danville" derives from the two main German families that were prominent in early settlement there: the Hecht family from Altdorf (now part of Danville) and the Buhl family from Baden (now part of Lancaster). The first permanent European settler in what is now Danville was Johann Georg Hecht, who arrived on horseback on October 15, 1847. By 1849, he had purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) southeast of present-day downtown Danville from José Francisco García de la Guerra y Ulloa. The original town site was named Hechttown after him. The first post office was established at Hecht's cabin on February 17, 1850. In 1851–52, George Witte came to Danville with his brother James Auld and started a wagon trade transporting goods between Stanislaus City and San Joaquin County for local farmers. In 1860–61 Witte built a new sawmill on current day Mill Street near what is now State Route 474; it became one of the largest cotton mills west of Chicago. From 1862 to 1865 he served as mayor and recorder for Kern County under Governor John Lynch. In 1863 Captain George Hartsfield bought 400 acres (160 hectares) northwest of present day downtown Danville from Danish immigrant Ole Hansen for $1,500 sterling ($1400 US dollars at today's prices). This area became known as Noren Ranch after Captain Hartsfield’s son-in-law Jens Nielsen Nordby leased it to him in 1871 while still proprietor thereof. Noren Ranch prospered until 1907 when it was acquired by Dwight Morrow & Co., lumber merchants who decided not to continue operations because they did not find any good land within reach where they could build their mills on it; however they left behind numerous buildings which have continued to be used by the town ever since including Noren Schoolhouse which serves as both its historical museum and municipal building Today many descendants living outside of town still visit Noren Elementary school during lunchtime so you can see why people call this place home! Danville was founded on April 26, 1853 by James W. Danforth and his wife Catharine. The town was named after Danforth's ancestor, Daniel of Danville, Virginia. The first post office in the town was established on May 1, 1853. In 1870, a school district was organized in the town and the first public school opened in January of that year. In 1876, a general store was built and in 1889 a cotton gin was constructed. The community experienced significant growth following World War II when new housing developments were built in the area. By the late 1990s, Danville had declined somewhat as its population decreased and businesses closed down. However, recent economic revitalization has seen some new development within the limits of the community as well as several restaurants and bars being opened up around downtownDanville
