It has been over 50 years since the Danville Shooting Range was established. The range, located in Danville, California, is home to some of the most experienced and qualified shooters in the area. It has been through many incarnations and changes throughout its history, but it remains a popular spot for shooting enthusiasts of all levels of experience. The first incarnation of the Danville Shooting Range was established on December 3rd, 1941. At that time, the range was just a small field situated next to what is now known as U.S. Route 395. Due to World War II efforts and then postwar construction projects in the area, however, the original range became quite large by today’s standards. By 1951, it had evolved into what it is today- a well-maintained gunnery practice ground that can accommodate up to 100 shooters at any given time. Through its many incarnations and changes throughout its history, the Danville Shooting Range has become one of America’s most popular shooting venues. Danville is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,313 at the 2000 census. Danville is located east of San Francisco on Interstate 280. It lies within the City of Richmond. The first permanent settler in the area now known as Danville was John Rockwell in 1847. He named his new land for Daniel Chesterfield Tucker, a friend and mentor to him during his early days as an entrepreneur and cattle rancher in Texas. In 1868, General George Custer fought at Washita River against the Sioux Indians and died near Danville while leading his unit southward along that river toward Fort Worth. One account says that when General Custer's body was recovered by soldiers some miles downstream from where he fell, they found "a most perfect copy" of him wearing a blue blazer and carrying a white cane with a gold handle - another general who had also fallen victim to Indian hostilities just two years earlier! A local resident, Mrs. Ladd (Lydia) Dickinson soon began marketing Frontier Malts whiskey distilled from corn she grew on her family's 10-acre farm west of town; it became one of the few selling points for settlers attracted to this isolated community which lay at the crossroads of two major wagon routes -the Santa Clara Road linking San Francisco with Sacramento and then down via I-280 towards Los Angeles; direct access to both railroads made it an important hub for trade and transportation during its early years." In 1861 Drury opened what would become Danville's first post office under mail delivery service provided by stagecoaches between Sacramento and San Francisco. By 1870 there were over 20 stores operating out of town center including five grocery stores plus three feed stores catering to livestock interests; blacksmiths met sometimes weekly for hammering nails into wood posts to hold fences or corrals together during winter months; stone masons built churches (one Congregational), schools (two primary grades), taverns (three different types), built wells (four different sizes) plus several residences including Mrs.(first name unknown) Rockwell’s famous “Rocky Mount” home which still stands today 5th Street Northeast corner First Avenue Northwest
