Airforce gift history in Davis, California began on December 2, 1947 with the purchase of a C-47 Stratofortress by the Davis-based Air Force Base Unit. The airplane was used for cargo transport and was first used by the 9th Air Force at RAF Odessa, Russia. On July 8, 1951, the 1st flew to Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona to be used as an air traffic control tower during Operation Highjump. It served this purpose untilactivated on October 15, 1969 when it was replaced by AN/APG-5 radar equipment from Hickam AFB Hawaii. On October 15, 1969 (Operation Highjump), 1st USAF ACFT sold AN/APG-5 Radar equipment to Davis Airport to become their new AAFGC 5B(2) which operated until May 1972 when it became TXA-3C while still being stationed at Davis AFB. The last "1" USAF ACFT at Davis AFB was redesignated WACF-1Z on May 25, 1978 and moved to Wright Field OH due to budget cuts that led to the closure of American bases throughout the country including Davis AFB effective June 30th 1978. The last active USAF ACFT in Sacramento County was aircraft WACF-4E which retired from service on September 12th 1981 after serving with distinction over thirty years at Sacramento County Airport providing passenger transportation and support activities for tenant airport operators both civilian and military alike including Republic Airlines and Delta Airlines who leased or outright purchased portions of the structure during its stay afloat.
