In the early 1900s, Davis was a small town in Northern California. It had a population of around 10,000 and an army detachment stationed there was responsible for all military functions within the town. The detachment consisted of about 70 soldiers and civilians who served together under the command of Colonel John Sutter. The detachment's primary duty was to provide protection for the town during peacetime and to take part in military exercises from time to time. However, on occasion they would also be called upon to assist in other tasks related to their garrison duties. One such task involved providing gifts for visiting military officers or dignitaries. As is often the case with affairs at state level, these events generated some pretty interesting gift history! One such event occurred on November 14th, 1907 when Major General Ulysses S. Grant visited Davis. He came down from Sacramento and spent the day in town before traveling back upriver to visit his troops at Monterey Barracks. During his stay, he stopped by the detachment's barracks and gave out some really nice gifts - including a set of field glasses! Unfortunately, one of those gift items has gone largely unnoticed until now... Just prior to his departure from Davis, Colonel Sutter issued a proclamation ordering all soldiers and civilians within his command to present arms at Fort Point if possible expediting shipments of new rifles (which were then still being produced). The town grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of two major trails, the California Trail and the Mormon Trail. By 1855, Davis had become an important stop on both trails. In 1858, Davis became part of Mexico when that country split into two sections, one led by Santa Anna and the other by Maximilian I. As part of Mexican territory, Davis was subject to Mexican laws and regulations. In 1861, American forces invaded Mexico and defeated Santa Anna's army at Buena Vista Creek. As a result of this victory over Mexico, Davis became an American territory and became known as Sacramento County. In 1866, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating Calaveras County in order to help settle immigrants who had arrived in California during the period of war between America and Mexico. The new county included parts of what are now Contra Costa and Sacramento counties. In 1870, another act created El Sobrante County which included most of what is now Marin County. In 1901, after years of discussion among local officials regarding plans for a bypass around Los Angeles City Limits (an earlier plan called Angeles National Forest), then-Governor Hiram Johnson announced that he would build the bypass instead. On November 16th 1903, Governor Johnson made history when he declared that his 8-mile wide "Bypass around Angeles City Limits" would be completed within five years - making it one of only a handful projects throughout California ever accomplished without voter approval or congressional funding
