The Davis Army National Guard was formed on September 17, 1885 from the California Militia. The first Commander of the Davis ARNG was Major General George Armstrong Custer. The mission of the ARNG is to protect and secure our citizens and property in the city of Davis, California. The Davis Army National Guard has served as a key component of our military for over 100 years! During World War II, the Davis Army National Guard contributed more men and materiel than any other unit in Northern California. In 1942-1943, the ARNG assisted in providing security for Lodi Naval Ammunition depot and Beachcomber airfield which were under Japanese occupation. In 1944-1945, members of the ARNG fought off an attack by up to 1,500 German soldiers at Bakersfield Air Field which resulted in many losses for our Unit. Today’s DavisArmyNationalGuard Officers and Soldiers proudly serve their country with distinction! Our Unit has maintained its traditions of excellence through service both during wartime and peacetime!

Davis, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 64,174 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth largest city in Northern California and the second-largest city by population in San Francisco County. The area around Davis was first settled by Native Americans and became part of Santana del Oro Mexican land grant in 1821. In 1846, following the Mexican–American War, Davis was sold to American settlers as part of Rancho Sacramento. The town began to grow rapidly during the early 20th century because of its location on a major route between San Francisco and Sacramento. A branch of the United States Military Academy (USMA) served as a teacher training school here from 1898 to 1918; it re-opened as an undergraduate college in 1919. The nearby Mount Diablo National Forest played an important role in Davis's growth as a rural community during this time period. In 1940, Davis incorporated as a city and placed its downtown business district within its limits; it remains one of the most densely populated cities in North America today. During World War II, Davis became one of central points for military supplies distribution announced by General Douglas MacArthur when he arrived here on October 15th 1941 after his victory over Japan at Midway Island; further fuel rationing led to increased production at local firms such as Phillips Petroleum Company which were able to stay open despite difficult times throughout much of 1942 due simply to their larger size relative to other businesses locally involved with war production - something that had not been possible before Angeles City Limits were set up
