Davis was founded on November 3, 1847 by John Adams Davis and James Bogue as a camp for Weaver's Colony of Missionaries of the Crossroads (later known as Alta Marea). In 1849, became an independent town when it was annexed by Sacramento. On January 1, 1860 it became the seat of government for all Contra Costa County when that county was created from parts of Sacramento and San Bernardino counties. On October 15, 1872 Davis incorporated as a city with a population of 2,500 people. The first mayor was Edwin Cranch Waddell and the first City Councilor were George Ewing and Hiram Sibley. The current city councilmember is Teresa Shea-Baker who won her election on November 3rd 2017

Davis, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California, about 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of San Francisco. In its early years it was a small trading post and mission station on the Donner River. The town was founded by John C. Fremont in 1856 as Sacramento on the site of an old mission station. It became an independent city in 1893 following the passage of statehood laws enacted by Governor James Buchanan. Davis has been governed by a City Council since 1906, when it had its first Mayor. Davis was founded by José Alcalá y Costilla in 1824 on the east side of San Joaquin Valley, about five miles north of modern Fresno. The site was originally called Costilla's Rancho Viejo de la Luz and later Rancho Los Pinos. In 1847, Mariano Castro moved from California and granted the land to Davis County. The first post office at Davis was established in 1851. In 1861, Davis became an incorporated town when it adopted a government of its own. In 1871, following the admission of California into the United States as a state, Davis became part of newly created Kings County. In 1888, following a gold rush in parts of California, many new residents began moving to Davis because of its social and economic opportunities. Growth slowed during the 20th century but ended with the arrival of technology that made farming more difficult and brought about increased competition for resources from other states. Today, Davis is home to some 1 million people who live in over 150 businesses and villages located throughout its population center spanning 3 square miles (8 km2).
