Davis, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 82,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. Davis was founded on January 26, 1847 by James Burdick and his wife Sarah Caulfield Burdick. Davis became an incorporated town on March 14, 1850. The area now known as Davis was first surveyed in 1838 by John Sutter and Gabriel Orozco. The region around present-day Davis was part of Rancho San Francisco del Valle de Alameda y Del Monte which were granted to José Joaquín Valenzuela in 1827 and sold to George Washington Goodwin in 1829. In 1839 the land was bought from Goodwin by John Dutton who named it Rancho San Pablo de los Altos because of its high elevations. A post office called "Davis" was established at this site on February 5, 1840. The name of the town changed to "Davis" on June 2, 1860 due to the fact that one James Burdick had two children with his first wife Mary Ann Haggerty: David Burdick and James Buchanan Burden (1809-1892). On May 25th 1861 during American Civil War Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his cavalry trooper Danville Hill to cross the creek nearpresent day Midway Road bridge over Coyote Creek into Union Territory under orders from General Beauregard for special operations against Union forces led by Major General Philip Sheridan; however Hill instead walked across Coyote Creek undetected until after he reached Union territory where he surrendered without battle or combat injury On July 15th 1865 Major General Ulysses S Grant's army came downriver from Sacramento Valley looking for Wheeler's Bridge which showed up as a big red target next to an old millstream just west of downtown Davis; upon finding out about this they burned all bridges east of Sacramento River including Wheeler's Bridge so no more supplies could be brought southward & thus ended Sherman's march northward through California
