Maga coffee started in Davis, California in the early 1920s. The first store was opened by P.J. Maga and his brother-in-law, Harry Ransom. It was a small grocery store on 17th Street near University Avenue. In 1923, Maga started to sell coffee beans direct from the farm he operated in Mexico City. In 1928, Harry Ransom and P.J. Maga purchased an old adobe house on Imperial Avenue and began to roast their own beans. In 1930, they moved to 128 Sutter Street where they continued to roast their own beans until 1945 when they sold the business to Wm. Fischer & Sons of San Francisco which became Magee Coffee Corporation Ltd.. From 1945-1953, Magee Coffee Corporation Ltd., also known as WmFischer & Sons Co., produced and distributed the famous maga coffee brand name throughout North America including Canada under the name of Stroud’s Canadian Coffee Company Limited.. In 1951, WmFischer & Sons merged with another leading coffee company named National Roasting Company which gave rise to Magee Coffee Corporation Ltd.: a company that still produces maga coffee today!

Early pioneers such as John C. Davis himself played an important role in shaping Davis into what it is today- a thriving metropolis with a rich cultural heritage dating back to its founding story! Some of our earliest residents include pioneer ranchers George Crocker and Hiram Clarke who both arrived around 1850; banker James Hartsfield who built up some of Sacramento’s first commercial enterprises during this time; J B Hunt who had his original cattle drive stop at present day Apple Valley; Elisha Sage who homesteaded on current day North Capitol Street; doctor/physician/builder Drury Sul Rossberger; Wm Folsom whose millinery store soon became one of Sacramento’s leading businesses; and Father Edward Willoughby from Boston, MA who came to preach missions in Northern California during this time frame (Willoughby Canyon still remains). Davis quickly grew into a busy center due to its location close to major highways, access to markets and resources like water rights that made it an ideal place for business development and growth! Numerous industries have flourished here including food processing (the famous Hunt Foods corporation being founded here), chemical production ( Manufacturers Trust Company later becoming Nestle) and transportation (the opening of Interstate 5 bringing commerce into town).
Davis was founded in 1851 by John C. Davis and Jesse Y. Davis as the small town of Red Bluff. The town grew rapidly, becoming a small city in 1875. On July 4, 1876, Davis became an incorporated city after successfully petitioning for status from the state legislature. In 1942, during World War II, the Japanese bombed the city and killed over 100 people.
