Davis is a city located in southeastern California. It is the seat of Tulare County and has a population of 153,443 as of 2017. The first Europeans to arrive in Davis were José Manuel Bueno and his brother Francisco, who came in 1847 from Spain. The town was founded on November 6, 1857 by George C. Smith, an American soldier who had been discharged from the Mexican army after losing an engagement at Tejon Rancho San Joaquin. In 1858, the United States Marine Corps established Camp Davis as a training ground for Marines. In 1863, General Harney Johnson ordered the evacuation of all Californias military forces due to their tense relationship with Mexico. Davis, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 71,161 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and home to both the University of California, Davis, and the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The first Europeans to visit what is now Davis were Spanish missionaries in 1769. A year later, Lieutenant Colonel George Crocker arrived with his party on horseback to explore what would become Sacramento County. After years of exploring and mapping his area, Crocker named it for Lieutenant Colonel George Davis who had accompanied him on this exploration. In 1846, Captain David Waddell founded an adobe settlement here which became known as Waddell's Promontory after him. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century because of its location near two major railroad lines: The Central Pacific Railroad and the Western Pacific Railroad. Many businesses were established in this time including banks and hotels; one such business was called "The Capitol" which still stands today across from UC Davis Stadium on H Street in downtown Davis. During World War II many locals aided in supplying food for soldiers living along I-5 outside of San Francisco thanks to donations received through local relief organizations like Save Our Soldiers and Sailors Foundation (SOS). In 1948, when Interstate 5 was built bypassing downtown Davis by cutting through farmland east of town, much debate took place over what should be done with downtownDavis' land which included much important university property like Regents Park and McClatchy Tower - both now part of UCD campus. Ultimately it was decided that most importantly DowntownDavis needed room to grow without blocking traffic so a new shopping center was built adjacent to Regents Park while retains some university properties like McClatchy Tower while creating space for other commercial districts within DowntownDavis limits like North Street District & Midtown District where many restaurants are located today due to Interstate 5 construction projects that have since passed away such as I-580/I-680 Business Loop which will soon connect downtownDavis withSAN Francisco making it easier access for commuters but having no real impact on current residential or commercial development within City Limits
