The Davis Rifle and Gun Museum is a museum in the city of Davis, California. It was founded in 1933 by John Witherspoon. The museum has an exhibit on American guns from the late 1700s to the present. Davis, California is a small city in the Central Valley of California, about 100 miles (160 km) east of Fresno and 50 miles (80 km) west of San Francisco. The original settlement in what is now Davis was founded by Mormons in 1847 as part of their migration from Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1851, it became the capital of Californias new Republic and remained so for most of its history until it moved to San Francisco in 1850.
