Just west of Sacramento, Davis is a city of over 100,000 people that has seen its share of history. The town was founded by thevarious Native American tribes who lived there before European arrival in the early 1800s. In 1851, it became part of the newly formed California Territory and was named for Governor Joaquin Miller. The first coffeehouses in Davis were located on Mission Street near University Avenue. By 1860, two buildings had been built and the business began to grow rapidly. A second location was opened on 15th Street in 1870 and soon became known as "the Coffee House at 5th and Mission." This location served as a central spot for socializing and connecting with friends from all overDavis County. In 1876, four years after incorporation into the City of Davis, one of the first businesses open in town was "The Dutchman's," which became known for its excellent coffee products. It quickly became an institution in town and helped contribute to the growth of Davis as a center for coffee culture. In 1892, The Daily Worker newspaper established itself in downtown Davis as one of America's first daily Newspapers published outside New York City. It remained here until 1971 when it moved across country to become The Wall St Journal (WSJ). From 1915-1999 (the era during which it operated), The Daily Worker was headquartered at 611 Sutter Boulevard in Sacramento’s historic State Capitol building – now home to offices belonging to both Kaiser Permanente Healthcare System (KPS) and Planned Parenthood Federation Of Northern California (PPFNC). When WSJ left Sacramento, many old newspapers were lost along with much valuable historical footage or photos associated with that period of time including coverage from 1916-1999 about local politics within our community making headlines all over North America!
