Delano is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River. Delano was founded in 1851 by Colton and Anna Whitman. The name "Delano" is derived from Spanish "delantera," meaning "the other side." In 1876, two years after California became a state, the U.S. Congress passed an act designating this area as part of present-day San Joaquin County for the purpose of homesteading American citizens who had arrived there since 1848. In 1889, local officials approved a system of irrigation ditches to provide water for citrus crops and grazing livestock; but it wasn't until 1922 that Delano's first store was built and its first school opened. The post office at Delano has been in operation since 1850 and has been called various names including: Forno's Mill (1857–1861), New Market (1868), White Settlement (1875), Purdy's Landing (1878–1901), Woolen Mill (1902–1903), Brownstown Landing(1904–1920), Winespring Valley(1920–1925) and Agricultural Experiment Station No. 7A(1945). The community experienced some growth during World War II when many people moved here to work on military bases or in aircraft production plants; however, most development stopped afterward because of lack of currency options or housing availability within minutes' walk of most businesses. This change started to happen again starting in the late 1990s as more people returned to town after moving away for different reasons or simply because they found something new to do hereabouts; however, most recent real estate development has occurred only around Interstate 5 nearby with no impact on adjacent neighborhoods such as Old West Village which are home to more than 4500 residents dating back over 175 years!

Delano is a small town located in Solano County, California. It was founded in 1849 by the brothers George and John Delano. The town served as the temporary capital of California during the Gold Rush. In 1851, it became the permanent capital when Sacramento was destroyed by fire. The name of the city is derived from Spanish delanas, meaning "island" or "Island Creek." Delano's demographics have changed repeatedly over its history: it has been an agricultural village until the early 20th century; a manufacturing center during World War II; and since then has become an largely bedroom community for northern California. The first European to visit what is now Delano was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542. He named sites along present-day Highway 101 including Point Arena and San Lorenzo as Santa Cruz de la Laguna (Island Sound), Isla de Palos Verdes (Island of palms) and Islas Madres (Mother Islands). As time passed various other Europeans visited these areas including Father Francisco Xavier de Vallejo on November 7, 1769 who mapped out most of today'sSolano County area which includedpresent day Delano. The mission at Point Arena was founded on November 10, 1797 under Father José Arguelles y Valdivia with assistance from Antonio Funes y Betancourt as part of Rancho San Pablo near Petaluma Valley. A second mission Pinole opened on December 4, 1800 also serving Rancho San Pablo east of present day downtown Delano with Father Manuel Nieto officiating In 1849 George & John Delano bought 640 acres north of where they lived in Point Arena from José Gomez for $1 per acre which at that time amounted to about $10 million dollars today At that time people used to go up there for hunting deer horses rabbits etc., but started farming around 1840 because there were no other places to get lots of water so they built dams across many creeks especially Mission Creek which starts near present-day northeast corner lot number 6052 offered by Wm Haggerty . At one point they had nine dams total and all operates perfectly still today! All those years ago I helped clear all that land off .....amazing how things change

In 1870, a railroad station was constructed in the town. The first store in Delano opened in 1880. In 1889, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in the town and it closed down for several years. By 1912,Delano had regained its previous prosperity and had an estimated population of 100 residents). In 1916, a dam was completed near Delano and flood waters began flowing into it from nearby Lakeside Dam which led to increased flooding throughout south-central California due to rain runoff from winter storms that year
