Delano is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 70 miles east of Sacramento. The population was 5,700 at the 2000 census. Delano is known as an agricultural and ranching center, with crops such as cotton, corn, and cattle. In recent decades it has become a bedroom community for Sacramento. The first Europeans to visit what is now Delano were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on their way from Mexico City to San Francisco in 1769. They named the place "San Marcos" after General Marqués de San Marcial Castro's father-in-law, who had been killed at Presidio of Monterey during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The U.S. Army built Fort Stockton on Canoga Creek in 1847 and then founded Camp Kearny in 1851 to provide military defense against Comanche raids across central California. The fortifications were upgraded in 1861 when American forces invaded Mexico to fight for independence from Spain; they became known as Fort Worth Barracks until 1865 when they were transferred back to the United States army under command of General James Kettler. In 1875 the town was platted by George Copley Paine; it name was changed two years later to honor Ulysses S Grant because he had been commander of Union forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). A post office opened in 1880 and remained open until 1907; its last mailing address was "Delano, CA 91945." Ulysses S Grant visited Delano twice while commanding Union forces during World War I: on October 25th 1915 while leading a group of troops south from Los Angeles through what is now Fresno County into Kings Canyon National Park; and again on December 8th 1916 while leading troops north from Kern County into Salinas Valley towards Yreka before returning northeast along Highway 99W towards Tulare County that night near present day Visalia. After World War II local agriculture gradually gave way to more modern methods like chemical herbicides or subsoil cultivation for production of fruits and vegetables; however much remains unchanged today including many farms which are still operated by families who have been farming here since before there were any towns or villages in this area
