Delano is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 26,752 at the 2010 census. Delano is the largest city in San Joaquin County and one of the most populous cities in Northern California. It is also the most populous city in Southern California. With a population of over 30,000 people and an area of just under square miles (100 km2), Delano has become one of two majority-white cities in Northern California (the other being Sacramento) as well as one of two major Hispanic/Latino enclaves in North America. The site where Delano now stands was first inhabited by Native Americans about 10,000 years ago according to archeological evidence found near the community today. In 1851, it was part of Mexico City during Mexican rule; but when Californio settlers arrived following Texas annexation that year they named their new town "Delano". The name "Delano" came from Spanish word "delaona", meaning "place where there are many deer." When Ulysses S Grant became President of Mexico in 1846 and ordered all American settlements east of Mexico be burned to prevent any more Anglo settlement he changed the name to honor General José de San Juan's victory at Palo Alto against Mexican forces on November 8th that year. At first it was thought that Grant intended to rename San Francisco after him although he never did so; however history shows this would have been suicide for several reasons including confusion with Grant's older brother Samuel Chasey who had also won fame fighting for Santa Clara Valley interests during American civil war times (and like Ulysses S Grant had married into a prominent Mexican family). In 1868 when white men began arriving in large numbers following Gold Rush rushes to these parts they founded towns such as Angels Camp and Mineral Wells which quickly outgrew Delano proper and its boundaries were gradually drawn back until within a few years it covered only about one-third of what it does now due largely to its location at what is now I-5 exit 121A southbound on State Route 178 eastbound. However despite this shrinking perimeter some important cultural events took place here including: opening day celebration for newly organized Alta California Republic – July 4th 1849 at Hotel del Coronado featuring speeches by then Governor Pico Rivera and Senate president José Mojica ; First International Exposition held concurrently with Pan American Expo – October 6 & 7th 1853 at downtown Los Angeles features exhibits from around the world including Chinese art; Indian Rebellion Day commemoration parade through town May 25th 1865 led by Mayor James Ahern followed by ball game between local team Giants and visiting Stockton club Belmonts at old Mutual Park opposite Court House Square ); Insurrectionist movement led by Samuel Gompers creates Red Hot Legion militia – August 15th 1861 confrontation between Patriot Guards & Gompers' militia near busyo thoroughfare northwest corner Main Street) As early as 1870 industry started growing here with tanning operations, brick making and lumber production becoming very important especially given nearby water shortages caused by gold Fever epidemics occurring sporadically throughout much of northcentral California during that period; railroads brought new commerce into town; main street became known as 'the artery' linking different portionsof town with each other while commercial districts grew up around railroad tracks leading westward away from center downtown

Delano was founded in 1851 by John C. Fremont and his wife, Catherine. The town was named after General Anthony Delanos, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then helped to build the Transcontinental Railroad. The first store opened in 1854. In 1857, Delano became the seat of Butte County which merged with Montana Territory in 1861. In 1863, Delano became a city and it has since grown into one of the most diverse and populous cities on the West Coast. The city is home to many famous landmarks such as Mount Diablo National Park (home of two Andes mountains), University of California at Berkeley and Paramount Pictures studios. The early years of Delano were important for its connections to transportation routes that led to Sacramento and points east. The railroad reached Delano in 1856, making it an early stop on what would become one of America's largest shipping lanes. By 1865, when San Francisco was founded,Delano had become an important trade center for goods moving between the Bay Area and Greater San Diego
