Delano is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about an hour’s drive from Fresno. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Delano comes from Spanish meaning "the Dell" or "the high ground." A post office called Delano was founded in 1848, and remained in operation until 1918. The town was incorporated on July 1, 1912. The community of Delano began as a farming village with a population of around 100 people. As California's economy grew during the late 19th century, so too did demand for agricultural land and labor in the San Joaquin Valley. Agricultural businesses developed near Delano to fill this need; these included a tannery and brewery by 1881, and two flour mills by 1913. In 1916, John Dominguez opened what would become one of America's largest watermelons production facilities (later renamed Packinghouse Foods). This business helped contribute to the growth of Delano over time as more people moved into the area to take advantage of its resources. In 1933, local businessman Harry Hinkle established his first grocery store in what would later become known asdelanosmithfield Grocery & Dairy which would remain open until it closed in 1984 due to allegations that Manager Harry Hinkle took kickbacks from suppliers while running his business. During World War II much interest centered on agriculture becauseDelanos had strategic locations along Highway 99 between Stockton and Visalia that allowed easy access to cargo arriving via rail through Bakersfield or Sacramento City before being unloaded at various warehouses near downtown Los Angeles

It was platted in 1859 and named for John A. Delano, an early settler who helped open up the valley for agriculture. The first post office in Delano opened in 1861. The community grew rapidly after the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad's rail line to nearby Stockton in 1869. By 1870, Delano had a school and church, as well as several businesses including a grocery store and blacksmith shop. In 1875, local farmers formed the Union Wind Farm to provide power for their homes and farms. The town experienced significant growth during World War II when military personnel moved into the area to build defense plants and munitions mills. The population reached 2,500 by 1945 but declined to 1,491 by 2000 due to various factors such as loss of jobs within the military industry and declines among other sectors of society. However, since 2000 Delano has seen steady growth with its current population topping 2,700 people
Delano was founded by Captain P.J. Delano in 1836 and became a town in 1849. The first post office was established in Delano in 1847. The first store was built in the town on the corner of Third Street and Polk Avenue. It was known as the "Pioneer Store." In 1853, the Webb & Hutton Telegraph Company established offices on Second Street in Delano and this led to an increase of business for the store. In 1865, J.D. Webb opened a grocery store at Fourth and Polk Streets which soon grew into one of California's largest grocery stores. In 1886, Wm Hutton bought out J.D.'s interest in the grocery store and it continued to be run by him until his death in 1907. From 1906 to 1916, John Bischoff ran the store until he sold it to Trust Company of California president John Sutter who reopened it as a general merchandise store with a department for notions under his ownership from 1916 until its sale to Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc., also headquartered at 4th andPolk Streets, San Francisco, California (now part of Macy's) in 1949
