Delano is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 31,865 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northwest corner of Kern County and is bordered by Bakersfield to the east, Del Paso to the north, and Fullerton to the west. The City of Delano was founded on February 14th 1887 by Simeon A. White and his family. The name "Delano" was taken from an Indian word meaning "settlement." The first post office called Delano was opened on December 15th 1860 by James H. McDonald and served as part of San Bernardino County until it was moved to Kern County in 1876. For many years it functioned as the largest town within county boundaries with a population over 10,000 people. In 1907 citizens of nearby Fullerton petitioned for annexation into Delano (at that time it included all of present-day Kern County) because of their mutual interests in agriculture and industry; however full annexation never occurred due to political differences between Fullerton's Mayor Fenton Dutton and then-Kern County Supervisor George Prentice (now known as namesake George Prentice). On May 30th 1906 Jens Jensen became the first white person born in Delano when he married Gertrudis Christensen there on what would be her only day as a naturalized citizen of America after being admitted on October 6th 1902 with her parents permission. In 1916 during World War I Jens Jensen enlisted with Company K USMC Reserve Infantry Battalion #1 which fought at Anacapa Island off Santa Barbara CA before being discharged at Camp Pendleton CA on November 11th 1918 with honorable discharge papers dated January 12TH 1919 remaining unopened until recently when they were discovered inside an old box belonging to another family member who had preserved them since childhood! By 1900, however, Delano's economy had begun to decline due largely to changes within American society which caused decreases in farm production and an increase in manufacturing jobs opportunities across America. As a result of this changeover within American society, few businesses continued open through much of the next century while development took place elsewhere within the townspeople themselves who slowly regained some semblance of their former prosperity by World War II
