Delano, California is a small city located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 729 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Delano is a small town with a mix of various cultures from around the world. The economy of Delano depends on agriculture and ranching activities. The city has three libraries: one for public use and two for private use (one being Delano Public Library). There are also several businesses in the city that offer services to residents such as plumbing, landscaping, home repair and renovated homes. The mayor of Delano is Bob Buckman who was elected in November 2004. The first settler in what is now Delano was John Cushing who arrived on horseback in 1846. He named his new settlement after his father-in-law, David Dodge who had come overland from Oregon the previous year with many cattle and horses to help settle what would become San Joaquin County. In 1848, George Atherton founded Athertonville near present day downtown Delano and named it after himself because he owned all of Rancho Atherton within today's boundaries of the City limits when it was established as an incorporated town in 1912! All other towns within San Joaquin County were created by act or ordinance passed by then-Governor John Pembrey on December 3rd, 1911 without any input from the people - this caused some confusion since most people thought all towns were created equal! As time went on more settlers arrived including James Waugh who came up river from Sacramento in 1852; Lorenzo Gaston who ranched land between present day eastside streets 4th Ave & US 101 southward to where Ranches Road now ends; Hiram Sutter - originally from Northern California but settled hereabouts about 1855; Emmett Jukes (1858) – started an adobe brickyard hereabouts which became one of Southern California’s leading brickyards; Augustus Kelley (1860) – ran a store hereabouts before coming west to found Stockton; Nathaniel Jarvis twins (1864) – brothers began ranching Hereabouts before founding their own village 5 miles north called Jarvisown about 1918Today’s East side streets are actually Nancarrow Street/Nathaniel Jarvis Drive NE & E Chavez Rd
