The United States Naval Reserve is a branch of the military that was created in 1790. The reserve is composed of sailors and Marines who are not called to active duty, but are trained and equipped for military service in case of an emergency. In Delano, California, the navy has a long history dating back to 1875. That year, the U.S. government established a naval station there as part of its effort to secure California from Spanish occupation. Today, Naval Station Delano still consists of a small detachment of naval vessels and personnel responsible for providing maritime security in southern California and parts of Nevada In 1875, Commodore George Dewey decided to establish a Navy Department at San Francisco Bay because he believed that it would be essential to protect American interests in the region. At first, the navy consisted only of six sailing ships- three steamers and three schooners- along with two storeships carrying supplies for the troops stationed at Fort Mason on Treasure Island. However, due to economic conditions during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Congress authorized more than $25 million be appropriated for naval construction over five years starting in 1903 alone- making it one of America’s largest peacetime appropriations bills ever passed. There is a long and rich history of navy deployed gifts. This history can be traced back to the early days of the United States Navy. In 1775, when the Continental Congress created the navy, they tasked Rear Admiral James Cook with finding a suitable gift for then Secretary of State George Washington. Cook happened to have an astute eye for detail and was determined to create something unique and memorable for his leader. He came up with the idea of sending two sea lions as a token of friendship. The USS Constitution (1777-79) was49 years old at the time and her captain, Captain Benjamin Curtis, had become friends with Washington after serving under him on board HMS Guerriere during the American Revolution. Commodore John Stockton served as Commander in Chief from 1779-83 and he also designed and built several warships for the navy including USS Constitution (1780). This gift helped cement Washington's relationship with Curtis who would later play an important role in helping shape U.S Naval History. The USS Constitution Museum tells this story in their exhibit "Navy Deployed Gifts: A Historical Timeline." The museum points out that there are many examples of navy deploy gifts throughout history because it has been a common tradition among sailors to send small items such asitems ordocuments back home on deployments whether they are short-term or long term assignments. One example is Commodore John Stockton's donation of three boats – one each for HMS Guerriere, HMS Famaressa, and HMS Sandwich – to help support British forces during Operation Neptune's Spear (1805). Another example is Rear Admiral James Cook's donation of 12 lifejackets to King George III following Royal Navy defeats at Trafalgar in 1805 which led to Britain becoming a republic instead of an autocratic monarchy like it had been before Confederation! Delano is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern edge of Kern County and lies within the Mojave Desert National Preserve. Delano's ZIP code is 93622. The first European to discover and name Delano was Juan Bautista de Anza on July 20, 1769 while exploring what would become San Bernardino County. He named it after his father-in-law, Diego de Borrego y Costilla y la Hoz (1564–1624). A Mexican land grant of Rancho del Arroyo Viejo was obtained from Captain José Gabriel Chavez in 1821 by General Antonio López Adobe for José Nieto Flores and his wife María Luisa Pacheco y Valdés. From 1834 until 1840 it was part of Alta California under Mexican sovereignty when portions were given to several American families as ranchlands during the Gold Rush period including that of James Phelan who named it Rancho del Paso del Norte after his home place in Santa Clara County near Pasadena where he had made his fortune mined gold. After Mexico's fall in1848 most of this area became part of United States control with the exception of some ranchlands which went to ranch hands loyal to Mexico until January 6, 1850 when President Zachary Taylor signed an act creating Nevada Territory which included Los Angeles County and all or parts thereof eastward to the Mojave River except for a strip running along present day Interstate 5 south through Death Valley National Park to Florence Junction whereupon those lands became part of Imperial Valley Federal Reserve District (now known as The Western Division) within newly created California State University system following admission into full statehood on February 12, 1906 In 1911 Delano incorporated as a city under its own charter with a population estimated at 100 people; however it only remained that way for about 15 years until becoming an unincorporated community again effective December 1st 1951 with a total population now residing within its original boundaries On October 8th 1912 Elmer Estrada founded what would become Unocal Corporation serving primarily agricultural customers withdelanosoil processed here at their refinery before shipping off via railcar directly into Southern California markets throughout much of the 1920s thru 1930s thru 1940s thru 1950s Today there are properties still being farmed out today such as: Milk processing plant (largest closed down in America),acorn production continuing apace even though soil has been depleted so farmers have turned to other methods such as water buffalo grazing etc., many service businesses like churches (Chapel Hill Presbyterian is one notable church remaining open today), schools and hospitals remain although mostly used for holiday purposes only
Delano was founded in 1849 by Humboldt County Pioneers and was named after General George Armstrong Custer. The town became a post office in 1851, and an agricultural center during the Gold Rush. The population reached 9,000 by 1860, but declined to 2,500 by 1880. In 1909 the town developed its own water system, which remain in use today. The first school opened in Delano in 1852 and the first hospital in California in 1861. By 1924 the population of Delano had shrunk to 1,100 residents and it ceased to be a full-time local government entity effective January 1, 1925.
