Delano is a small town in Northern California, located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The name was given to it by Captain George Atwater who named it after his father, Delano Atwater. It has been home to many prominent people over the years including Governor Hiram Clark and President Ulysses S. Grant. The first European settlers in what is now Delano arrived with the Spanish Empire in 1821. They were led by José Feliciano and named it San Francisco de los Padres Land grant after Father Padre Francisco Xavier Solís, who had visited California in 1769. In 1839, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill near Delano and development began as a result of the new wealth brought about by mining operations. In 1851, General Antonio López Cámpora became governor of California and ordered all remaining Mexican citizens east of the Sierra Nevada be deported. Many Mexicans decided to move westward into what is now Delano because they could find no other opportunities for living than ranching and farming in difficult terrain. By 1861, there were more than 1,000 people living in Delano proper while another 2,500 lived scattered around its environs due to family ties or wanderlust; few if any knew each other well enough to form social units outside of their families. By 1870, when Gold Rush fever swept through California following discovery of vast amounts of gold at Sutters Mill and elsewhere throughout the state, only a tiny percentage (less than 10%) of those living within 500 miles of Sacramento owned land that would become part of today's city limits – most residents lived on ranches or farms which were accessible only by wagon or boat ride from nearby towns or villages such as Winterset (on present-day Highway 99), Madera (now part of Modesto), East Palo Alto (the easternmost point on Diablo Ranch), orVisalia (in Visalia County). "Mining," "settlement," "growth" are all terms used frequently throughout history when referring to this period in local history but until recently there was little understanding behind why certain events transpired during these early days: primarily due largely to lack access to historical records which have been lost over time either due destruction from fire or weather damage suffered during numerous earthquakes which struck Northern California over that time period...
