The first European to visit Delano was Captain James Cook in 1778. A mission was founded here in 1821 by Father Junipero Serra and Dr. Francisco Xavier Cabrillo. In 1848, the town was platted by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George Cogan. The name "Delano" comes from two Spanish words: "del" meaning 'brook' and "nano" meaning 'a little'. In 1851, an ad for a place to buy land near Redding encouraged settlers to come to Delano instead of going westward along the Sacramento River because of the low cost of land hereabouts. In 1870, Gold was found at Sutter's Fort about 12 miles east of Delano. By 1880, gold had been discovered all around this area including at nearby Bakersfield; however, no one came until after Captain Robert Hutton's expedition sent overland from Stockton in 1886 led by Lieutenant Colonel Frank Beall Investigations into deep water mining in Kern County revealed prospecting possibilities in what had hitherto been considered worthless country between Bakersfield and Stockton which became known as the Central Gold Fields (). On September 20th 1888 Hutton reported finding gold at Sutter's Fort southeast of present day Delano (). Mining began immediately with men working handcart over difficult terrain through dense brush on both sides of the creek leading up to Niles (now called old US Highway 4) where they would sift through huge piles or pans filled with quartzary rocks () up to their waist deep! This discovery led directly to what later became known as downtown Delanos industry with a number of local businesses opening up such as Wachtel & Sons Hardware Store (), Stookey Bros Brewery (), Jansen Dry Goods Store (), Gartner ClothingStore (), Fenton Rubber Company (), Snively Silver Mines(), etc.). The citizens quickly built themselves a substantial brick structure on what is now Fourth Street (now called Vine Street) which still stands today (). Just south of it on Third Street there were several larger stores before eventually being replaced by smaller businesses during more recent times such as AutoZone () across from American Legion Post No. 746 (). Downtown business districts continued until recently when most shops closed down due to competition from newer development close to Interstate 5X . A post office opened at Delano on December 17th 1863 (the date California statehood occurred). At that time there were only three other townships within Kern County: Ceres ($3,500), Pahrump ($10,000), and Oildale ($18 thousand). Waterloo also opened its post office soon thereafter but it remained inactive for many years before closing its doors permanently in 1907 due principally to lack thereof customers statewide! Cities like Fresno and Visalia rapidly grew around these mines while communities outside these areas slowly disappeared or experienced rapid growth whereas Delanos infrastructure never grew much beyond its original depot/post office complex until very recently when increased competition from Interstate 5X has caused some shops/businesses within downtown districts closure . Today remnants can be seen scattered throughout townscape including various emptied stores/ warehouses along Fourth Street which once housed Wachtel & Sons Hardware Store (), Stookey Bros Brewery (), Jansen Dry Goods store (), Fenton Rubber Company (), Snively Silver Mines(), AutoZone () among others; although not open for visitors currently!

Delano, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of Central California. The population was 34,555 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Roseville-Hanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent resident in what would become Delano was José Cámpora on July 4, 1847. In 1851, John Sutter and his brother George built Rancho San Francisco at present day Delano for their herds of cattle and horses. They named it after General Antonio Lomas de la Vega who had fought for them in the Mexican-American War. The rancho passed from family to family until it became part of Rancho Los Alamos National Monument on November 3, 1908. In 1868, three brothers - Hiram Bingham (1815–1892), Charles Wickersham (1825–1902) and Franklin Higginson (1829–1911) - established Westinghouse Electric Company with a main line from Sacramento to Stockton which they called the "Higginson Line". The company transported goods by horseback over miles of badlands and up hills to reach their customers near Stockton in two days or less. Their townsite sprang up around telephone exchanges they built near their power plants while they were engineering/building these lines; today's downtown Delano was founded around one such exchange building In 1868 Hiram Bingham married Anna Maria Swope (or Swanee). They had four children: Edwin Muralt (born 1870), Ernest Bowers (born 1872), Alice Swope Bingham Snell(born 1880) and Clyde Ewing Bingham (born 1888). In 1895 Anna Maria died due to child birth complications when her husband was absent on business trip to China; he never remarried but he left behind an orphaned daughter named Esther Ann Swope Bingham Healey who later served as Deputy Mayor of Delano from 1969 to 1974 under Mayor Bob Casey
