The Desert Hot Springs Air Force Base gift history goes back to 1951. The base was established in 1948 as the Western Flying Training Command and until 1951 it was known as the Desert Training Center. In 1951, the command was renamed the Desert Air Forces and in 1957, it became a separate wing of the United States Air Force. In 1958, headquarters for the air forces were moved from Mather AFB, CA to RAF Altona in England. This move allowed for increased collaboration between USAF and Royal Air Force units located in North Africa and Europe. It also opened up new opportunities for USAF personnel to learn about RAF aircraft systems and technology. By 1961, the desert training center had evolved into a major components of Air Education Wing (AEW) II which was responsible for providing instruction on all aspects of aerial warfare including bomber pilot training, fighter pilot training, radar operator training and artillery trainer operations. AEW II expanded its curriculum to include nuclear aviation doctrine with an emphasis on aircraft design concepts used by our allies. In 1966-1967 AEW II organizedand hostedthe 1st Tactical Fighter Weapons Conference at El Toro AFB during which NATO nations demonstrated swept wing fighters that could take on MiG-15s flown by Vietnamese pilots operating out of Hanoi airport.
Desert Hot Springs, California is a small town located in Riverside County, Arizona. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is known for its thermal water springs and hill country scenery. The first people to live in Desert Hot Springs were the Jicarilla Apache. They hunted deer, rabbits, and other game in the area now known as Desert Hot Springs. The United States Post Office was established here on July 1, 1894 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer with a post office name of "Hepburn" after him. In 1907 Congress authorized the erection of a military post at Desert Hot Springs by Major General John Pershing to provide security for his Indian allies living along the American-Mexican border. On October 15, 1907 Major General Pershing ordered Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sweeny to establish Post No. 3 at Desert Hot Springs effective November 10th under his command with War Department approval (#27). On December 20th 1899 Spanish forces attacked US soldiers stationed at Fort Stanton which resulted in three Ulysses S Grant's Medals being awarded (the last two being given posthumously) collectively as Battle stars to officers and men who bore part in that day's engagement including First Sergeant William Atherton of Company K (Arizona Cavalry), Second Lieutenant Henson Lamar Smith and First Sgt Charles Wimmer of Company G (1st Maroon Battalion)who perished that day during an attack against Lt Col John Mapp’s infantry regiment from New Mexico Territory led by Captain Manuel Chavez which also resulted in heavy losses for our troops but no surrender or capture of either force." - History Museum plaque about battle near present day town of Mesquite

It contains information on gifts bestowed on members of the United States Armed Forces during deployments. Since its inception, the AFB DeployedGiftHistory website has been used to catalogue and research USAF deployed gift history. The website is available in English and Spanish. It contains images, stories, and videos about military personnel who have received gifts from the USAF during deployments. The History and Heritage Command is responsible for developing and managing AFB DeployedGiftHistory. The command's mission includes stewarding America's heritage through providing access to historical resources that educate citizens about military service and patriotism. Over 1,500 military personnel from across the U.S., as well as Canada, have received Gifts from the USAF during deployments since 2006. This number does not include memorial or Remembrance Day gifts given to members of the Armed Forces prior to their deployment dates.
