The Desert Hot Springs Army Depot was originally established in 1912 as the San Bernardino Arsenal and Ammunition Plant. The depot became an army post in 1917, and was renamed the Desert Hot Springs Army Depot on July 1, 1942. It served as a major ammunition depot for World War II before becoming an armory in 1949. The depot was closed in 1994 and its assets were sold to the California National Guard.
Desert Hot Springs is a small town in Riverside County, California. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and is east of Interstate 5. The springs were discovered in 1887 by Spanish Explorationists looking for water resources in the area. They named them La Hacienda de las Casas after Rancho Las Casas, which they had just acquired from Mexican landowner Pío Pico. In 1912, La Hacienda's owner built a hotel and 1911 became one of the first towns in California to adopt an elected government with a nonpartisan mayor and council. In 1948, when President Harry S Truman visited Los Angeles during his presidential campaign, he stopped at Desert Hot Springs for lunch at The Grapes restaurant on Main Street before continuing on to Palm Springs. Truman was impressed by the springs and decided to visit more often as president; he returned to Desert Hot Springs three times between 1949 and 1951. Desert Hot Springs was laid out by the Eastern Route Company in 1885 as a station on their route from Los Angeles to Palm Springs. The name seems to be derived from "desert" (from "désert") and "hot springs" (from "hotele"). A resort called Desert Inn was built there in 1912 and became one of Riverside County's most popular tourist destinations. In 1951, it merged with neighboring towns Paradise Valley and Springdale to form the new city of Victorville. The first post office opened at Desert Hot Springs on July 14, 1886, under the name Victorville Station. It continued operation until it closed on December 15, 1923; its last letter being V forVictorville. A train stop existed at this location until 1915 when an express depot was built north of town which replaced an earlier wagons-hauled stagecoach stop known as Cedar Rapids Junction Stagecoach Stop due to its close proximity to that county seat of Riverside
