Desert Hot Springs is a small town in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 1,986 at the 2010 census. It is located within the Mojave National Preserve. Desert Hot Springs is named for the hot springs that were discovered there in 1879 by George Fenton and his son-in-law, Wiley Post. The springs have been used to provide drinking water to the community since 1881. The first store opened in 1880, and the first post office was established in 1892. In 1907, Desert Hot Springs became an incorporated city under the name of Wellsville. In 1912, Wellsville merged into Desert Hot Springs as a single city with a population of 3,500 people. The City Council of Desert Hot Springs adopted Resolution No. 9 on November 10th of that year stating "It is hereby resolved that City Council approves Resolution No #9 authorizing Mayor Knight to construct a new fire station which will be located on Main Street in front of the Citizens Bank." This building currently houses the Police Department and has two stories and a basement accommodating more than twenty-four firefighters. On December 15th 1960 council approved Resolution No 7 authorizing Mayor Knight to paved Main Street from its current width between First Avenue and Second Avenue to one mile wide with asphalt pavement for all vehicular traffic including buses which had previously only traveled on Easton Avenue between First Avenue and Second Avenue during morning hours when vehicles were not being converted from coach or truck to bus Mode; this project also included widening sidewalks along both sides of Main Street from Third Avenue eastward (to Seventh Ave.) An agreement was made between Desert Hot Springs Water District and Wayman Construction Company whereby Wayman would do all construction necessary for annexation by DHRD; this annexation occurred on January 1st 1964 when Wayman completed their work on annexing portions of desert hills east of downtown including North Parrow Road bisection; this project cost $724,000 dollars On October 14th 1969 an Agreement was reached between Desert Sun Water District & All American Pipeline Company whereby All American would build an expansion pipe line extending beneath Interstate 805 south from Palm Valley down through Kings Canyon National ParkportionoftheDesertSunNationalParkandupalong Nutrient Creek thence northward across Nutrient Creek Lake towards Mecca where it would join up with existing pipeline easement thru Malibu Canyon National Monument & onto Ventura Boulevard without having any environmental impact & without charge against DHRD

Fremont in 1885 as an oasis for soldiers and their families during the Mexican-American War. In 1951, it became a retirement community for U.S. military personnel and their families, and has since been known as one of the most popular retirement communities in the United States. The first people to live in Desert Hot Springs were American soldiers who fought during the Mexican-American War. After they left, local ranchers began to come here to bath and relax after working on their property in nearby Yosemite National Park. By 1915, there were about 50 residents living in Desert Hot Springs proper, while more than 1,000 people lived outside of it on farms and ranches that bordered the valley floor. The city of Desert Hot Springs was founded on July 15, 1911 by the amalgamation of two small towns in the Mojave Desert. The town of North Palm Springs and the community of Spring Valley merged to form Desert Hot Springs. The name "Desert Hot Springs" was given to the area by Colonel John D. Hutton, who served as military governor of California during World War I. The City Council adopted a resolution recognizing American Legion Post 5952's Centennial Celebration in 1923 and decided to adopt "Desert Hot Springs" as the official name for the city in that year. After World War II, desertification caused many communities in Southern California to merge into larger cities, but Desert Hot Springs remained primarily a agricultural center with few significant industry interests until the late 1960s when oil exploration began operations near downtown. In 1978, Mayor Tom Bradley proposed that the city become an independent municipality within metropolitan Los Angeles County; however, county officials opposed his plan because it would have required approval from both local and federal governments. As a result, Desert Hot Springs became an unincorporated community within Los Angeles County on January 1, 1980. Today, desertification is still a major problem in parts of Southern California; however, due to increased development outside of town limits and use of water recycling systems instead of agriculture-based irrigation methods, much environmental improvement has occurred in recent decades including reductions in air pollution levels and increases in cane production which supports over 150 jobs across three generations at two businesses
