Desert Hot Springs, California is a town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The name "Desert Hot Springs" comes from the springs that are found near by and used for bathing in during the hot summers months. The first permanent settler in Desert Hot Springs was Wm Hurlbut who arrived on July 10, 1885. Hurlbut named the springs "Hot Springs", after his home in Carthage, Tennessee. He also built a small cabin here which he used as a summer residence until his death on October 2, 1886. In 1902 John Wesley Powell became known as America's first certified Geographic Explorer when he reached Las Vegas through what is now Desert Hot Springs Boulevard and Yuma Road while exploring Nevada's Great Basin region overland via Stagecoach Trail wagon route from Stupa to Carson City and then down the Mojave River Valley toLVN Passageway Station where supplies were unloaded for winter travel into central California due to lack of water resources east of Mono Lake. In 1924 real estate developer Averell Harriman purchased Rancho Mirage from Don Hasson and reopened it as an oasis-style resort called Blue Lakes Resort with its own spa, golf course, swimming pool and tennis court (now Harriman Park).
