There is no doubt that coffee has long been a popular drink enjoyed by many. Coffee first began to be traded in small quantities as farmland was valuable for growing beans. It wasn’t until the 16th century though that coffee became known throughout Europe. The first coffee bean was grown on the island of Sumatra and it took over 100 years for coffee to reach America. Coffee beans were shipped overland from Asia and Native American tribes would trade goods such as beans, tea, and other products in order to purchase food or tools. The Dutch traders started shipping coffee back home in 1624 and by 1651 they had introduced coffee into New Netherland which became the first European colony in North America. The Dutch monopoly on world trade ended with Britain becoming the first nation to produce roasted beans commercially in 1795. The popularity of espressoresso increased during World War II when people realized how delicious this particular type of coffee could be after tasting it at military briefings and conferences. After the war, people wanted more variety so they started buying whole Beans instead of ground up beans which gave birth to gourmet coffees today! Desert Hot Springs is a small, isolated community located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The community was founded in 1911 by General John Pershing and his wife, Marilla. It is named for two springs that serve as the town's water supply. The first spring opened in 1887 and the last one in 1912. Today, the only way to get water from the springs is by walking or taking a horse and buggy ride to one of the smaller outposts dotting the community. The hot springs have been used for many different purposes over the years including beauty treatments, medical treatments, relaxation and even sexual recreation. In 1916, actress Norma Shearer visited Desert Hot Springs for her treatment for tuberculosis before moving to Hollywood. Actress Joan Crawford also visited during this time and was quoted as saying "I thought it would be just like any other place I've ever been - except instead of being all dry I'm living on hot sand." In 1951, actor Rock Hudson used the baths as part of his filming schedule for westerns He Fights with Nature (1951) and Big Brown Eyes (1952). In 1955, singer Pat Boone used them to treat bronchitis during his stay in nearby Palm Springs. Actor James Garner also visited during this time as did director Mel Brooks when he made Blazing Saddles (1960). Today, Desert Hot Springs remains an important tourist destination due to its unique setting and its many attractions including hiking trails leading up to several of the springsipks; a restaurant serving local cuisine; a gift shop; a library; and an art gallery featuring various Western paintings dating back to circa 1910. The history of coffee begins with the Arabs who first began to trade in beans in the seventh century. Coffee was not a popular drink among the Arab people, but it became very important to them after they discovered how to roast and grind coffee beans. The first coffee houses were opened in Baghdad and Damascus in the ninth century. In 1492, Columbus discovered America and soon After he sailed over Florida, he realized that there was a great deal of land that could be explored. He named this place America after his discovery. Soon after his arrival in America, he started trading with the natives and found that they liked coffee just as much as Europeans did. Consequently, espresso (a type of coffee) started being brewed by Italian sailors on their return trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to Asia during the sixteenth century. By 1670, French traders had begun trading with Japan and Korea and began importing a large amount of Portuguese-grown beans which gave rise to what is now known as café umbrello (coffee shop). In 1795, Coffee merchants founded new plantations in Brazil where Brazilian black beans were grown for export back to Europe. By 1850, more than ninety percent of all caffeine consumed globally came from Java Island where Sumatran roasting techniques were used for better quality beans
The first coffee was brewed by an early explorer, Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Coffee beans were roasted and ground in the Philippines before being brought to Europe. The Dutch started roasting coffee in 1609. The English also began trading with the Philippines and Indonesia for coffee. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French diplomat, set up a plantations near Manila to produce Java Coffee and Roast (Coffee of Java). After years of exploration and trade, Portuguese traders discovered the rich resources of coffee in 1605 when they explored the Malabar Coast of India. In Japan, Jesuit missionaries became interested in planting trees for Coffee production on Mount Fuji because of its high altitude and fertile soil. By 1700, Japanese merchants had reached Nagasaki where they traded goods such as salt, tea and Sakura tree bark for Philippine Coffee from Spanish traders. Around 1800–1900 coffees from Sumatra were being exported to Japan as well as other parts of Asia
