Desert Hot Springs is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Mojave Desert about 22 miles east of Bakersfield and about 25 miles south of Victorville. The hot springs are first mentioned as early as 1847 when prospectors found them on a map of the Owens Valley region. In 1875, John Wesley Powell explored the valley and named it after himself, Mount Washington in honor of his mentor George Washington Carver. The area surrounding present-day Desert Hot Springs was part of what was called "the Great Central Valley" until it was acquired by Los Angeles County in 1912. In 1919, Pasadena City Council voted to annex Desert Hot Springs into Pasadena so that it would have an easier time getting water supplies from Coyote Wells Reservoir which supplied most of Southern California. However, this annexation failed because there was no referendum to approve it and Pasadena refused to give up its water rights without compensation. Eventually, both Riverside County and Kern County approved giving up their water rights in order to allow development near the springs while still providing surface water for residents nearby. This caused environmental damage as well as loss of agricultural land around Coyote Wells Reservoir but finally ended with approval from all parties in 2003 when two large reservoirs were built next to each other across from Desert Hot Springs Boulevard (now Pershing Drive). Today's population is much smaller than when first established but there are several businesses including a restaurant, gift shop and motel within walking distance of the springs property or via public transportation (Los Angeles Metro Rail Station: La Brea Village/DesertHotSprings) or SUV access from Interstate 805 (I-805). According to 2010 Census data, over 95%of people living within 1 mile radius visit either the springs property or local shops at least once a week during peak tourist season; however visitation rates have fallen slightly since 2000 due primarily to many people moving away during economic recession years instead of staying close to family friendly attractions like hot pools and pools!
