Desert Hot Springs is a small town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was founded in 1912 by George Hutchinson and his wife, Anna, on what is now known as Hutchins Ranch. The hot springs were discovered in 1874 by prospectors looking for new water sources in the area. In 1912, Hutchins donated 1,500 acres (540 ha) of land to the city of Los Angeles for use as a public park. The city also built a small municipally owned swimming pool on nearby Spring Canyon Road. The population of Desert Hot Springs peaked at 5,000 in 1925; however, it has since declined sharply due to the presence of non-native plants and animals that have taken over natural habitats. Today, the population size is only 350 people. Despite its low population density, desert hot springs are still one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California because they offer visitors unique experiences such as bubbling hot pools and clear turquoise waters.
