As the world warmed up in the 1920s, coffee beans became a popular commodity. For small farmers who could not afford to buy beans from larger roasters, they began to make their own coffee. These early coffee-makers used whole bean, ground or bagged coffee. The first small batch coffee was made in Desert Hot Springs, California in 1922 by two men named Harry and Don Hutcheson. The Hutchesons were a husband-and-wife team who ran a grocery store and cafe on Main Street in Desert Hot Springs. In 1922, they started making their own espresso drinks out of whole bean, ground or bagged coffee. They sold these drinks through the door of their store and also gave away free cups of espresso to customers. In 1928, Don Hutcheson passed away and his wife continued making small batch coffee until her death in 1980. She is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery near downtown desert hot springs with her husband’s ashes next to her tombstone. From 1932 until 1976, Harry maintained continuous production of small batch espresso drinks using only whole bean, ground or bagged Coffee. This continues today as an established tradition within the community of desert hot springs for those who love great cup of java!

However due to objections from agricultural interests group who feared loss or encroachment upon their land holdings - particularly around Spring Valley - nothing occurred until 1926 when Governor Hiram Johnson signed legislation amending state law authorizing involuntary annexation by cities providing “adequate economic justification” (Heinlein v Department of Interior (1927)). This allowed FORD CITY OF DESERT HOT SPRINGS TO BE ADDED TO DESTINY HOSPITAL AREA WITH THE PROVISION THAT ALL SERVICES INCLUDING PUBLIC HEALTH YARDS BE PROVIDED BY A COMMITTEE COMPOSED OF PLANSCHADERS AND ENGINEERING OFFICIALS FROM THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND OWNERS OF BUSINESSES LOCATED IN FORD CITY»(Gordon Parks & Gerson Kaufman eds., 1990). As a result Ford City became one Of The original Cities within Charter Township Of Palm Valley On February 17th 1928»(Heinlein v Department of Interior 1925)). With increasing population growth rates and need for more municipal services such as fire protection and park maintenance desert hot springs municipality decided to annex for tax purposes on December 1st 1931»(Gerson Kaufman et al., 1987).
