It served as a lighthouse until it was destroyed by fire in 1938. The next year, the Coast Guard moved to its current location at 4685 State Street and began serving the community as a harbor patrol officer. In 1951, the station became an air force base and then a Coast Guard Station again in 1987. In 1992, the Coast Guard Station here became a full-time law enforcement agency when it merged with the Sheriff’s Department. It is named after its two main diamond mines - the Diamond Bar Mine and the First State Mine. The first mine opened in 1881 and produced over $100 million worth of diamonds over a twenty-year period. The Second State Mine opened in 1916 and operated for ninety years until it was closed in 1984. Today, both mines are open to the public as part of the Diamond Bar National Monument. The two mines have been bequeathed to the community by their respective developers - John Sutter and George Stephenson - who donated portions of their profits to local schools and organizations. Today, many people visit Diamond Bar to view or hike around the historic sites or take part in various activities associated with mining operations dating back to 1881.

On July 14th, 1916, Captain John Wappinger of the New York Mercantile Marine Company donated his ship "Nancy" to become the first Coast Guard vessel ever dedicated exclusively to maritime patrol and surveillance along America's coastline. The Nancy patrolled New York Harbor until 1922 when she was replaced by the better-equipped SS Constitution . I n 1978, Captain Bruce Lunsford donated his USS Constitution Museum Ship Museum Collection (SSCM) along with 5 other ships from World War II including USS Ponce (CV-13), USS Wakefield (WK-8), USS Greer (CG-2), USS Mayport (LPD-1), and USS Sims (PF-9). NASM collection currently includes over 250 vessels including 4 UCLASS Ships! On October 25th 1988Commodore Forrest Denny presented Dr. Gordon Wassenaar with a gift bag filled with items commemorating American maritime history from 1815 - 1988! This was followed by a gala event at Commodore’s House honoring prominentAmericans who had contributedto maritime defense during this time period
