Diamond Bar, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,835 at the 2010 census and has grown to 11,715 since the 2000 census. Diamond Bar is part of the larger City of Bakersfield. The town was founded in 1887 by prospectors led by John A. diamond as a mining village named for his discovery of a large diamond near what is now Diamond Bar. The first building in what is now Diamond Bar was a hotel called the Crystal Palace which burned down in 1904. In 1912, the community became an incorporated city with John A. Diamond as its first mayor. In 1916, the United States Congress passed legislation creating the Kern River Water District to provide water to Diamond Bar and other parts of Kern County. The name "Diamond Bar" first appeared on maps in 1871 as "Diamond Valley". The town's namesake, John Diamond, arrived in 1881 from Nevada and platted the area around present-day Diamond Bar for himself and others. In 1893, mining engineer George C. Slocum coined the word "diamond" to describe this new type of coal he had discovered near present-day Menifee Boulevard and North First Street. In 1898, a post office was established at Diamond Bar; it closed in 1902 due to lack of customers. In 1907, local jeweler and store owner Willard Siegel opened his own store at 6th Street and Main Avenue. From then until 1923 when consolidation of Kern County led to the creation of Bakersfield proper, Diamond Bar served as its sole business district. During World War I (1914-18), diamond production increased due to wartime demand for military supplies including gemstones used by aviators for their wingsuit insignia. By 1919 there were over 20 diamond stores in Bakersfield alone; however most had closed by 1922 when Interstate 5 was built through that county linking all parts of California with interstate travel speedboats making smuggling operations much more difficult). In 1924–25 Charles Laughlin constructed what would become one of Bakersfield’s most notable landmarks: the first concrete paved expressway east of downtown Los Angeles bypassing entire Kern County (further divided into two during World War II when Donahue Dam was built).
