The National Guard was first organized in California on November 16, 1846. The California National Guardsmen were originally called the “Militia of California” and they served as an arm of the state government. In 1850, the militia became a regiment under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The regiment was renamed the 4th Infantry Regiment on December 11, 1850. On May 1, 1861, the regiment became part of Captain John Brougham Fremont’s Brigade when it was raised to become part of the Confederate States Army. On October 25, 1861, Governor Normal Pico ordered all Californian militias to be mustered out and disbanded. Of these units only about two hundred men remained at their respective homes when hostilities began in February 1862 with Major General Doniphan’s raid on Sacramento County. In 1863-64 there was much fighting around Alhambra and other towns in Dinuba Valley between Confederate forces and Ulysses S Grant’s Union army during his Marching Home Campaign. Some members of the National Guard unit that fought at this time are still buried within local military cemeteries today including Alhambra Cemetery ( Plot A-1 ), San Miguel Cemetery ( Plot D-2 ) and Coyote Hills Memorial Park ( Plot H-4 ). On April 16, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln called for all American troops in California to come into camp at Sutter's Fort following news that General Robert E Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. As American troops arrived from across country they were immediately deployed to support General Andrew Johnson's Department of California which included Dinuba Valley as its theater of operations. All soldiers who served here during this time are now buried within local military cemeteries including Golden Gate National Cemetery ( Plot A-1 ), San Francisco Military Graveyard (Plot J-6 ) and Camp Douglas Memorial Park (Plot K-5 ). A large number of Californian guardsmen died during World War II while serving with various regiments or divisions including: 9th Marines Regiment (1941), 10th Mountain Division 1942 – 1945; 36th Infantry Regiment 1943 – 1945; 33rd Armored Regiment 1944 – 1945; 45th Infantry Brigade 1945 – 1946

Dinuba is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Joaquin River, about 31 miles (50 km) southeast of Bakersfield and about 20 miles (30 km) northeast of Fresno. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dinuba has a total area of , all of it land. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kern County were Missionaries Manuel Arguelles and Gaspar de Portolà in 1821. They named this area "Isla Santa Margarita" after Saint Martha's Island, off the Mexican coast. Rancho Los Alamos was granted by Alvarado in 1839 to Coahuila del Norte grantsee José Mora y Valdés and his brother-in-law Juan Bautista de Anza as part of Rancho San José de la Luz granteeship. The name Dinuba probably comes from Spanish meaning "the little island". In 1851, two years after Alvarado's death, his son Miguel De Grandal sold interest in Rancho Los Alamos to James Marshall for $5,000USD with an option for another $5,000USD if Marshall could find water there Hatillo Lake which he did when he discovered oil well near present day Dinuba on July 17th 1863 In 1909 Thomas Edison built his power plant here while working on developing Kinetic Electricity which would eventually be used worldwide On January 1st 1959 Dinuba became one of 62 cities within the newly created State Of California as part of its efforts to integrate with other states In 1978 Highway 395 was completed through town making it easier for people & goods to get around There are two high schools that serve Dinuba: Bishop Mott High School and Wayland Middle School
Dinuba was founded on September 17, 1853 by prospectors José and Manuel Nieto. The town was named after the "Hacienda del Rosario" (the Reyes Rancho), a large grant the Nieves family had acquired in 1824. The first post office was established in 1857. In 1870, Dinuba Canyon was discovered and developed as a oil field.
