Dixon was founded in 1851 as a cattle town on the San Joaquin River. By 1865, the town had become an important railway junction and military post, with its own cavalry regiment and artillery battery. In World War II, Dixon became one of the most heavily bombed cities in the United States, with bombings occurring daily for over two years. The city's only remaining building from that time is the historical courthouse which still stands today. In 1969, Dixon was renamed after General John C. Dixon, who served as Commanding General of United States Forces in Vietnam from 1965 to 1968. The City of Dixon continues to celebrate General Dixon's life and work every year through various events including parade and street festival.

Dixon is located on HWY 395 and State Route 190. It is northwest of Bakersfield and southeast of Yosemite National Park. Dixon was platted in 1864 by John Dixon and his wife Elizabeth after they arrived in the area from Illinois. They named their town after their son James Dixon who had also settled there earlier that year. By 1870, the town had grown to include a hotel, school, church and more than 20 residences. It remained an agricultural community until World War II when it became an industrial center with production of munitions and other war-related products. In 1945 the post office was discontinued and most residents moved out to take up residence within Bakersfield or elsewhere within Kern County during the post-war boom period; however, a few continued to live in Dixon until its closure in 1959. The population of Dixon peaked at 2,512 in 1990 but has since decreased slightly to 1,953 as of 2010 Census data
