Dixon, California is a small town located in the heart of Northern California. The town was founded in 1887 by John Dixon and his wife, Emma. Dixon is known for its watermelons, apples, and ranchers who are part of the history of the area. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. The townsite was first settled by Humboldt Bay people as early as 1775. In 1847, John Dixon and his family arrived from New York to build a cabin on their property which they named "New Beginnings". By 1870, Dixon had four stores and six dwellings; all were built between 1847-1870. The post office began operations in 1881 and remained in operation until 1954. In 1907, Dixon became part of Yosemite National Park following the creation of that park by President Theodore Roosevelt. The town continued to grow as tourism increased; it reached its current size with 1,500 residents in 1960. Many of this growth took place due to nearby State Route 30 which became one of the busiest routes in Northern California during that time period because it connected many small communities within Yosemite Valley with Highway 91 north to San Francisco and south to Sacramento. One such community was Fruita which grew up around Interstate 5 where farmers could get access to cheap produce from far away while also making some money off their land sales through auctioning off parcels near Yosemite Valley proper
