Dixon is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bakersfield and 15 miles (24 km) west of Tulare. Dixon was founded in 1887 by George Dixon, a settler from Maryland. The population was 1,341 at the 2000 census. In recent years, Dixon has slowly undergone gentrification as increasing numbers of people move to the city for jobs or education opportunities. The first community in Dixon was organized on October 11, 1887 when nine men came together to purchase some land southeast of the present-day town limits. They named their settlement "Dixon" after George Dixon who had sponsored their enterprise. The group that purchased the land consisted of Jno. Halsey, Wm. Gorman, John Prentice, Lewis Crouse and James Ahernbach Sr.. Dixon's first post office opened on October 12th Mail Stop #2(now known as 2nd Street), which served residents of what is now part of Tulare County until 1914 when it became part of Kern County; however there are no records remaining to support this claim. On March 16th 1888 two men name O'Neill and McLaughlin arrived at Post Office #1 with a package they had just delivered from Maryland containing seeds for potatoes that were to be grown in the area. On July 6th 1889 Dixon incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name "Dixon". It held its first meeting on September 5th 1889 with Wm Fenton serving as mayor; other members included George Taliaferro Sr., Sam Jones and Jno Halsey Jr.. The community grew rapidly due to connections made through trade with surrounding communities such as Bakersfield and Tulare Counties which helped bring people together for common interests including farming and ranching activities; these days many businesses still operate within the boundaries of Dixon today including several banks along 2nd Street which also act as cultural centres for local residents
