Dixon, California is an unincorporated community located in Inyo County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert, northeast of Palm Springs and south of Truth or Consequences. Dixon was first established in 1911 by prospectors John H. Dixon and James Purdy. The community name was derived from a ranch owned by Mr. Dixon which was situated adjacent to present-day Dixon. The community had a post office from 1912 to 1915 and from 1917 to 1923. In 1938 it became part of the city of Palm Springs. A number of businesses were founded in Dixon during its early years, including Airstream Trailer Park LLC, Great Western Radio Corporation, The Dairy Queen (now known as Carl's Jr.), ABC Donuts & Coffee Company, and Northern Arizona University's Agricultural Experiment Station No. 5 (now known as the Desert Research Institute). In 1961 the City Council decided that Dixon would be annexed into the city limits of Palm Springs; however, residents opposed annexation because they felt they were being discriminated against by the city authorities. They gathered signatures sufficient to force a referendum for annexation but were unsuccessful due to lack of support from other communities within Inyo County that also desired incorporation into Palm Springs'. The population of Dixon peaked at 1,500 in 1970 but dropped to about 200 by 1980 due to various factors including environmental degradation caused by oil exploration across the Mojave Desert region around nearby Las Vegas Valley; low birthrates among those living near palm trees producing fruit for local distributors such as Costco; and fire suppression efforts initiated by then-City Manager Rick Gustafson necessitating less housing development near schools than originally planned due to increasedarson rates following major forest fires throughout Southern California in 1970-1971 which destroyed over 10% of all tree growth statewide
Dixon was founded in 1857 by John Dixon and his wife, Eliza. The town was named after John's father, James Dixon. The first post office in the community was established in 1858. In 1865, Dixon became a part of Alameda County.
