Many of these men died during this time period due to disease or combat exhaustion; however, they left an important legacy on society that continues today. For example, 9 out of 10 families who donated blood during World War II received donations from American troops serving overseas (Travis). Additionally, many veterans have taught us how important it is that we continue our military tradition and support our country through local donations (Bennett).

Dixon, California was founded in 1853 by John C. Dixon and his family. The town was named after John's father, James Dixon, who had settled in the area in 1847. The first store in Dixon opened on Main Street in 1854. By 1860, the population of Dixon had increased to 100 people. In 1865, Dixon became a stage stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. The town continued to grow until it had a population of 2,500 people by 1870. In that year, the town passed into state control and was renamed Aliceville. The population of Aliceville decreased over the next few decades as it lost its economic significance. It disappeared from the map completely by 1910 when its boundaries were changed to include portions of Cuttler and Moon townships. In 1920, Nixon reappeared on maps as a new community called Dixon Springs with a population of 150 people. The community experienced some growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases at Angel Island and Mare Island Naval Shipyards. However, it declined slightly following the war and reached its low point in 1975 when there were only 50 residents living there. In 1990, Dixon Springs was re-established as an unincorporated community with a population of 10 people
