Dixon, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It lies east of Bakersfield and south of Stockton. Dixon is located on Highway 199 and has a post office with the ZIP code 93627. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Dixon were the Klamath Indians who lived along the banks of the Siskiyou River to the north. In 1847, John Cranch started farming in what is now Dixon and named it after his father, James Dixon (1795-1868). By 1860, about 300 families had settled in Dixon. They built homes made from logs or earth mixed with straw and mortar to protect them from fire. The first school was opened in 1865 by Mrs. Auld as a day school for children of settlers who had moved into the area from other parts of Kern County. The first post office was established at Dixon on July 26, 1872 by Jno Witherspoon under the name "Newbiggin". In 1876, two brothers named George and Hiram Fenton founded an agricultural store called Empire Farms which became one of America's leading producers of hay and other livestock products until it closed its doors in 1922 due to World War II Allied bombing raids that destroyed most major farm businesses across Northern California during that time period

Dixon is a small town in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1887 by J.C. Dixon and his wife, Lizzie, on theranch of Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grants given to them by Governor Pio Pico. The name is derived from Dixon's discovery of a well near the town in 1887. The first post office opened in Dixon on February 25, 1888. In 1907, Dixon became part of the new county of Kern and was renamed Kingman after its first sheriff, George H. Kingman. The population reached 1,000 during the 1930 census and grew rapidly due to farming and ranching until World War II when it declined as a result of military activity and then increasing population density. During the 1960s and 1970s there was significant movement within the local community for Measure B (the "Dixon Amendment"), which would have allowed for annexation by Carson City into Kern County; however, this effort failed despite widespread support throughout the community. Today Dixon remains an agricultural community with a scattering of businesses catering to some local services while remaining largely self-sufficient economically.
