The three men planned to build a town that would serve as a retirement spot for local farmers and hunters who could no longer leave their homes during wartime because of enemy action or food shortages. By 1949, they had accomplished this goal by raising money from property owners through an economic development program they founded known as The Vineyard (). Lasky died in 1976 before he could see his town's completion but his brother Harry continued with the project until his death in 1984. After his death, Harry's children took over operation of The Vineyard until it was sold to developers David Geffen and Jamie Dimon in 1999 for $500 million (). Downey, California is a city located in southern California. The population was 153,837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County. Downey has been inhabited by various Native American tribes for centuries and was first known as "Nahant" or "Naha." The area now known as Downey was part of Rancho Santa Margarita de la Cienega, which was grant to José Gabriel Moraga in 1821. The town began to form as a result of the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1887, with its original center at what is now downtown Downey. The history of Downey begins with its founding on October 1st, 1887 by James Hickey and others involved with the building of the Southern Pacific Railroad. That same year saw an influx of new people when farming families from Northern California moved into and started to settle down around what would become downtown Downey. By 1912, business had begun to grow significantly in Downey thanks to a burgeoning citrus industry and annexation by Los Angeles County following Proposition 8, which granted voting rights to gays and lesbians (then still considered illegal). In 1916, local officials adopted a resolution calling for a boycott against World War I due to perceived neutrality on the part of Los Angeles County; this led to increased production at nearby Hollywood studios – something that helped create jobs for locals throughout the war years. Eventually Downtown became too noisy for residents and businesses alike so plans were made to demolish most old buildings in order make way for more recent developments such as shopping malls and office parks. However, protests from preservationists eventually stopped these plans after it was revealed that many historic buildings were not actually demolished but simply occupied by new structures without any historical significance being preserved intact like some famous churches like Mission Dolores were able to do back home in San Francisco despite protesters trying twice unsuccessfully over 30 years ago!
