Downey, California is a city in Southern California on the Pacific Coast. It was founded on December 12, 1904 by Don Chaffee and John Downey. The city was originally named after J.P. Morgan's mining town of Downey, California but it changed to its current name in honor of Cecil B. DeMille who had donated land for the city. Downey is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America with a population that ranges from Mexican immigrants who farm and ranch near the downtown area to Asians who work in nearby corporate offices and homes. Downey has been known for its annual "Christmas Parade" since 1919 which features floats made up of all manner of holiday cheer - elves, reindeer, snowmen, candy canes - as well as wreath-waving participants from throughout Southern California. The parade also includes a caroling contest and rock band competition during the early years before marching down Market Street to Stateland Park for a picnic lunch served at an old airstrip where bands would play until late into the night (now replaced by City Hall). In 1966 Downey became one of only two U.S. cities to host Expo '68 which showcased American technology through exhibits including television sets and computers; this event also saw growth in business interests around town with many new businesses opening up around Stateland Park as well as more residential development along Market Street
