Downey is known for its wine industry and for being one of the original communities in the area that developed into Silicon Valley. The first humans to live in what is now Downey were Nomadic Basketmakers who traveled from central Asia to sell their goods along the way. In 1847, George Washington Carver settled here with his family and began growing maize and other crops. He named his new community after General John A. Downie who had led British forces in battle against American troops during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, Don Wenceslas Peabody founded a chocolate factory near where he lived on Los Angeles Boulevard. This became one of America’s first major chocolate-producing companies and helped make Downey a leading center for chocolate production around the world. Today, Downey’s wine industry continues to be a majorstay in its economy, with many wineries operating within walking distance of each other across several downtown areas including Plaza de Armas and North Park Blocks (the former location of City Hall). Downey, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 54,481 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Bernardino County after Riverside and is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The first European to visit Downey was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1769. He landed on what is now Yorba Linda Beach after sailing from Santa Barbara Peninsula. On November 10 of that year he wrote an account of his voyage entitled "El Pardo de los Santos" (The Channel Islands). In 1875 Downey became the site of a water tower which also served as the town's first jail and waterworks. The community began to grow rapidly because it was located near two major railroad lines: Southern Pacific Railway and LA&PC Railroad. In 1915 Downey hosted its first municipal election and became one of the cities in southern San Bernardino County when that county was split into three parts: Downey Township (northwest), Pomona Valley (southwest), and Orange County (south). On September 5, 1923, President Calvin Coolidge signed Executive Order No. 4771 creating Los Angeles metropolitan area by merging all of Southern California's municipalities into one area under one management system with downingey being its primary centerpiece since it had been selected as the main city for this merger effort. At that time there were only 8 municipalities in southern San Bernardino County including Pomona Valley with 3 less than Downey while eastside El Monte had only 1 municipality which included portions of today's Irvine or Anaheim neighborhoods but not downtown Los Angeles proper (). It would be another 25 years before all but 2 outlying municipalities - Westminster and Arcadia - would join up with downingEY during annexation proceedings following their incorporation as cities themselves within Los Angeles metropolitan area starting on January 1st , 1970 (). Along with other northernmost Cities such as West Covina (), Rancho Cucamonga (), Sylmar () and Northridge () growth continued until 1997 when Beverly Hills annexed much of what is now Compton into their boundaries making then Hollywood/Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area
