The Coast Guard Pre- Vietnam Era was a time when their gift history in Downey, California was quite different. At that point the Coast Guard had only been formed as a department of the military after World War II and they were not given any type of Gift History until 1951. In that year they received their first set of gifts from the City of Downey which consisted of a patrol boat, life jackets and moorings. The Coast Guard also received their first set of gifts from the County of San Diego in 1957 which consisted of two officers and twelve men. The next year in 1958 they received their first set of gifts from Santa Barbara County which consisted of a weather buoy, life jackets and moorings. From 1966 to 1978 the Coast Guard received over sixty sets items from various local municipalities. During this time period they also built one patrol boat, three weather beacons and four weather balloons. In 1978 the Coast Guard lost their third Patrol Boat due to fire while being pulled into action off Southern California beaches against wildfires. This event left them with a large deficit in GiftHistory so they turned to local businesses for help in restoring old gift items as well as new gift items for future events such as tradeshows or special occasions such as Marine Day or Christmas Tree Lighting. Businesses such as Sears, JCPenney, Kmart, Sam’s Club and even Home Depot donated new or used clothespins, postcards, buttons and other small treasures to help fill up this large Gap in GiftHistory but it never happened without some effort on part of the Coast Guard Members themselves! Today there are regular communities throughout California that organize function where members bring along Collection Boxes filled with many old and new pieces from all over our state! Downey is a city in Southern California, located about 25 miles south of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1887 by John Downey and his wife, Eliza Jane Browning. The Backus family, who managed the town until 1899, were influential figures in early Downey history. Downey's economy has been based on agriculture since its founding and the industry which has grown up around it: cattle farming, manufacturing (especially munitions), and later service businesses such as accounting and engineering services. Today the city is known for its entertainment industry – including both professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities – as well as its retirees' community of Some Live Here Estates. The first person to live in what is now Downey was Susana Martinez de la Cruz, who arrived there with her husband Josefina Margarita Vargas from Mexico in 1887. They built a small cabin near present-day downtown on the edge of Rancho San Vicente Creek. The first post office at Downey opened in 1889, but no one ever lived there because there was no water available for them to drink or build a house. In 1895, John Dorman bought Rancho San Vicente Creek from Margarita Vargas for $1 million; he renamed it "Rancho Dorman" after his father-in-law William Cranch Dorman Sr., president of Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1907 ranch hands working for Mr. Dorman discovered oil shale under Rancho San Vicente Creek and started producing oil wells There became an international oil field boom during World War I when America developed new methods to extract crude oil from shale formations across North Africa and Mesopotamia; this led to an increased demand for access to Mexican landlocked resources like shale formations that had hitherto been trapped within American borders.] In 1919 downcomers James Breen (of Paramount Pictures) Herbert Latham (founder of Latham Oil) Harry Cohn (owner of Cohn Travel Service) , Jules Steinmetz (headman of Spanishtown Lake), Roy Bean bought part interest in the fields from American Petroleum Corporation . On January 1, 1932, the city merged with nearby Hawthorne to form a new city. The merger resulted in the displacement of over 100% of the population from Downey and Hawthorne combined - an event which has been called "the Great Migration."
