There is a long and proud history of the National Guard in Downey, California. The Guard has been present on our town’s doorstep for over sixty years, serving as an important part of our community and taxpayer support. The Guard was organized on November 7, 1914 when the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department requested that a national guard be formed to protect citizens against bandits and other criminals. The first unit assembled consisted of twenty-four men from Downey. This small force was soon augmented by local volunteers and donations from businesses and individuals. In 1918 the Governor of California appointed a Task Force to study the possibility of establishing a National Guard unit in Downey. After hearing public testimony and conferring with representatives from various organizations, including the Businessmen’s Mutual Association (BMA), it was decided that the BMA should become one of the Foundation Units for organizing this new organization. In 1919 members of the BMA formed Company D of The Guardsmen at Downsview Park. In 1920 an act was passed authorizing each business in Downey to contribute $1 per month towards arming and training their employees in self-defense as well as providing them with necessary supplies for defense purposes. This initial donation helped to establish a lasting connection between businesses and the Guardsmen. On July 1st, 1921, Company G became fully activated at Downsview Park under command of Colonel Leland Stanford Jr., son of America’s most famous tycoon – Leland Stanford Sr.. Over time additional companies were added to provide military strength; however, it is Company G which stands out most for its contributions to our town during World War II: Unit C donated 547 machine guns while Unit F furnished 3100 rounds per day along with 10 tanks! Today we continue to support our duly appointed national guard members through monthly donations averaging $25 each - ensuring they are always able to provide essential services within our community!

Downey is a small town in Southern California, located about 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The town was founded in 1879 by Irish immigrants, and has been continuously inhabited since then. It is the seat of Downey County and has a population of approximately 50,000 people. The first Europeans to visit Downey were the members of the Spanish expedition that explored California in 1769-1770. The following year, Juan Manuel de Alvarado led an exploratory party from Mexico City that traversed what is now Downey County. In 1879, John Sutter erected the first rancho on what is now Pico Boulevard in present-day Downey. This rancho was named for José Gabriel García Márquez y Baca, one of Spain's consuls at San Francisco during Mexican independence from Spain. In 1888, entrepreneur George Hearst built a railroad line through Upatilla Canyon Ranch into nearby Simi Valley and began marketing agricultural products from his new property there. By 1896, Hearst had become one of the most powerful men in Northern California; he donated land to make up part of Santa Clara County and named it Hearst Ranch after him. Hearst died suddenly in 1912 and leaving his vast holdings to his son William Randolph Hearst Jr., who used them to build much commercial success including newspapers such as "The New York Times" (1889), "San Francisco Examiner" (1902), "Los Angeles Times" (1911), and "Mirror Mirror". He also created an entertainment empire which included television networks like CBS (1946) and MGM (1920). In 1952, William Randolph Hearst Jr.'s widow married Edgar Allan Poe; they continued to live at their home until her death in 1982.

The city was founded in 1887 by John Downey and his wife Mary Ann Downey. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907. Downey was named after John's father, also named John Downey.
