Captain John's family would continue to live in the settlement for many years until they were forced to leave due to cholera pandemic which swept through southern California during 1857-58. During its incorporation period, Downey experienced some growth but also some decline because there wasn't much available development money at that time due to Prohibition which stopped alcohol sales in America during that era. Downey, California is a city in Southern California and the most populous city on the main San Diego County Peninsula. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. The population was 1,883,827 as of 2019. Downey’s history dates back to 1879 when it was founded as an agricultural community by pioneers from Northern Mexico known as “The Californios.” The name “Downey” derives from two Spanish words: dónyeo (down) and yún (hill). In 1887, Downey became part of San Diego County. The City of Downey was first established on November 14, 1879 by Mexican American settlers who had arrived in southern Alta California during the Mexican–American War. They named their new settlement after José María de la Cruz y Pacheco, a military general turned politician who had fought for Los Angeles County and its predecessor county of San Diego. La Cruz y Pacheco had come to Alta California with his brother-in-law Juan Bautista Aguirre and several hundred followers in search of land that may become available through conquest or purchase from Native Americans living within boundaries then under Mexican rule. Under his leadership, Rancho de las Pulgas (later Rancho Santa Margarita) was granted to him on October 24, 1878; this ranch became downey because it lay along present day Interstate 5 near Point Conception National Monument. On February 15th 1880 Julio César Chávez took possession of Josefina del Carmen García's grant "El Rancho Viejo" just north of what would later become downtown Downey at 12th Street and Pacific Avenue North; this grant later changed its name to "Chávez Heights". On December 6th 1888 Manuel Valdez acquired 640 acres containing present day Downtown Downey from Antonio Moreno for $5 per acre ($ in 2019). Valdez named his holdings "Valdez Hills" in honor of General Manuel Valdez who had led Mexico's successful expedition against Ulysses S Grant's army at Buena Vista Canyon four years earlier while serving with distinction as lieutenant colonel under General Tomás Urrutia Herrera. From here he began vigorously marketing his land parcels throughout southern San Diego County which he hoped would be realized into cattle ranges and other mineral rights possibilities should hostilities between Mexico and America break out again following President Grover Cleveland's decision not to recognize the Forbidding Treaty signed during theMexican Revolution In 1912 Mayor Leland Stanford bought 8 acres east of Center Street near Andrews Air Force Base for use as a parkland dedication site forMilitary Air Station El Toro which opened on July 3rd 1942 . mayorStanford donated all or part of 4 additional acres southwest corner lot #1014 east side road located at 9600 block South Mission Road today service station used by Lockheed Martin Aircraft parts hangar located now Baldwin Elementary School
Downey is located in the San Gabriel Valley and was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1851. The community developed around a cotton gin and mill, which were both destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. It became a small town after the railroad bypassed Downey in 1911 and began to build stations at other points along its route. In 1925, Downey annexed nearby Hermosa Beach, giving it city status.
