In 1924 it merged with other communities in San Bernardino County to become Downey Municipal Airport (IATA:DOW) and again in 1957 when it merged with other municipally run airports throughout Southern California, including Glendale (ICAO: GLENDALE), Ontario (ICAO: OAKLAND), Lancaster (ICAO: LANCASTER), and Burbank (ICAO: BURLAND). The Downey area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years by Native Americans who called it Pico de la Hacienda or "Pine Top Mountain". The first Europeans to arrive were Spanish Franciscans who arrived from Mission Santa Ana on July 22, 1769. They named the small town after José Gomez de Ayala y Valdés, one of their number. The first post office was established at Pico de la Hacienda on October 15, 1879. A year later a store opened up on what is now First Street in downtown Downey which served as the nucleus of what would become today's business district known as Old Town down to Artesia Avenue where Highway 101 meets Interstate 5. In 1912 two brothers - Harry Fenton and Jesse Lyle Fenton - set out to purchase 755 acres east of present day East Fourth Street between La Brea Boulevard and Scripps Drive for $1 per acre ($40 million at inflation-adjusted prices). Today that property forms much of Downtown Downey - bounded by First Street southbound on the east side of town limits; Third Street northbound; Artesia Avenue westbound; Interstate 5 southbound; and Second Street eastbound - making it one of only a few areas within Los Angeles County not currently under development! In 1924 local citizens working together organized themselves into what would become City Hall District No.5 which extended from Tomahawk Road through Valencia Boulevard to Seventh Street/Metro Center Drive – all within city limits today! This effort led to further growth – starting with incorporation as an unincorporated community on May 12th 1912 followed by annexation by the City of Los Angeles effective January 1st 1925. On January 3rd 1927 due largely to efforts made by Mayor James Whelan & Councilmember Clyde Dyer both men had traveled out there from Pasadena for a county fair held at Gossamer Park just outside their jurisdiction! With this event came new business opportunities for future residents such as trucking services offered along I-5 Exit 288 & I-10 Exit 217 opposite Cal Expo until those services were taken over by Greyhound Lines several years later (- Bus Rapid Transit service began operations along Broadway corridor following completion of Culver Line tunnel opening.). In 1934 when then Mayor James Whelan dedicated Compound #2 adjacent Willowbrook Golf Course off Harbor Boulevard for DePaul University’s School Of Business Administration having heard about their programs there he knew that housing developments could no longer be built without compatibility with research facilities! An important milestone occurred during World War II when entire Advise & Assist program operated out there feeding military troops barracks & mess halls right alongside Lake Arrowhead Aqueduct providing potable water!) Today you can still find remnants of that program Hearst Broadcasting purchased 820 acres surrounding downtown area back then forming / holding title thereto serving now primarily students attending Fullerton Community College while production facilities operate smack dab in between Hearst Mansion (& Mansion Studio)) gracing Midtown’s eastern edge! One building longtime home to ABC Radio network’s Westwood One studioscurrently houses Fullerton Unified School District administrative offices.. .And so we go forward…growing evermore quietly but steadily every day since 1920 when our ancestors first settled hereabouts under some beautiful sycamore trees!"
Downey, California was founded on October 5, 1877 by James Downey and his wife AnnaMaria. The town was named after the nearby Downey Ranch which Downey purchased in 1875. The first post office in the town was established on December 1, 1877. In 1907, the Los Angeles County Roads Commission realigned and changed the name of some streets in Downey to help promote growth there. On November 6, 1923, a fire destroyed most of the downey post office building and all but one of its annexes; the Annex #2 still stands today as a museum. Downey is located near downtown Los Angeles and is served by two light rail lines: MetroLink Line 1 (Blue) and MetroLink Line 2 (Green).
